During the 2006-2007 Eagle Pass Independent School District school year, EPISD inaugurated a second high school, C.C. Winn, to accommodate the educational needs of the growing Maverick County student population.
2006 marked the inaugural season for the C.C. Winn High School Mavericks and Lady Mavericks. In its young five year history, the C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks softball program has garnered three Bi-District Championships, including the school’s first Bi-District Championship in any sport in 2010, under the direction of standout pitcher Krystal Contreras, Class of 2012.
Fresh from leading her Lady Mavericks into the Area Championship round this year, including a Bi-District Championship against District 30-5A Champion Mission Sharyland High School Lady Rattlers, senior hurler Krystal Contreras has literally written the softball pitching records at C.C. Winn High School during her distinguished four year Lady Mavericks softball career (2009-2012).
In her freshman season in 2009, Contreras took the helm of the Lady Mavericks softball program into her potent right arm earning 14 wins and 11 losses with a 1.66 Earned Run Average (ERA).
During her sophomore 2010 season, Contreras continued building the Lady Mavericks softball program going 16 wins and 6 losses with a 0.98 ERA and winning the school’s first Bi-District Championship.
Contreras had a break-out season in her junior year in 2011 with a 20 wins and 12 losses overall record and a 2.01 ERA, leading the Lady Mavericks to a back to back Bi-District Championship against the La Joya High School Lady Coyotes.
During her senior year in 2012, Contreras had an outstanding season with 17 wins and 11 losses leading the Lady Mavericks to a third-consecutive Bi-District Championship over the perennially tough Mission Sharyland Lady Rattlers while posting a 1.83 ERA. During her brilliant four year career with the Lady Mavericks, Contreras earned 67 wins and 40 losses, pitched a total of 612 innings in 107 games, faced a total of 2,725 batters, threw 5,889 strikes and 2,456 balls, struck out 571 batters, gave 145 walks, and had an ERA of 1.62.
Contreras credits her parents for supporting her throughout her childhood and adolescence, all of her softball coaches, teammates, and friends.
Contreras developed an interest in softball pitching by watching former Eagle Pass High School standout pitcher Alexa C. Calderon as a young player. Calderon introduced Contreras to her San Antonio legendary pitching coach, Luis “Louie” Aguayo, who taught Contreras the fundamentals of fastpitch pitching before utilizing later other local pitching instructors.
Contreras also has excelled in her academic studies earning a high GPA at C.C. Winn High School and is a top 10% honors graduate candidate in June of this year.
Contreras’ dream is to be able to continue playing softball in college as her mentor Alexa C. Calderon did. She is currently evaluating her options before determining where to go to college.
One thing is certain, however, that Krystal Contreras has earned her place in the C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks softball record books. Congratulations to Krystal Contreras and best of luck in her future college softball and academic endeavors.
