Agents of the U.S. Border Patrol install a memorial for Agent James R. Dominguez
Agents of the U.S. Border Patrol honored one of their own earlier this week, installing a custom memorial marker on U.S. 90 near Brackettville for the late Agent James R. Dominguez.
Dominguez, 41, was killed the morning of July 19, 2012, about 20 miles east of Brackettville while he was helping a motorist who had a flat tire. As Dominguez was picking up tire debris from the highway, he was hit from behind by an F350 pickup.
The somber, moving ceremony that saw the installation of the bright yellow and blue marker with Dominguez’s name was held Monday.
Family, friends and a cadre of fellow agents from throughout South Texas were at the ceremony, which was led by Chief Patrol Agent Rodolfo Karisch of the Del Rio sector.
The memorial was constructed by Border Patrol agents.
Agent Anthony Cabrera of the Laredo Sector obtained permission from the Texas Department of Transportation to install the memorial at the site.
Cabrera is a member of the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club, whose membership consists of active and retired law enforcement officers.
The Blue Knights, along with several other motorcycle clubs, met in San Antonio to escort the family to Uvalde for Monday’s ceremony.
The Del Rio Sector Honor Guard participated in the ceremony, standing watch as the marker was installed by Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Jose Hernandez and Agent Ignacio Mendoza, both of the Rio Grande Valley Sector.
Dominguez, who was based in Uvalde, was a 12-year veteran of the law enforcement agency. Survivors include his wife and their four children.
