C. C. Winn Mavericks clawed by Laredo Martin Tigers 33-13

Fresh from their season opening victory over the Uvalde Coyotes 21-20 last week, the Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Mavericks sought to win their second consecutive game against the Laredo Martin High School Tigers on Saturday, September 7, 2013, at the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium in Eagle Pass, Texas. However, the Laredo Martin Tigers had their own plans on upsetting the home standing Mavericks and walked away with a convincing 33-13 victory over the courageous Mavericks on Saturday, September 7th.
The Mavericks opened the scoring in the game with 3:26 left during the first quarter on a 61 yard drive in the first quarter culminating on a one yard touchdown run by standout Mavericks running back Deion Alonso and the point after attempt was no good, giving the Mavericks an early 6-0 lead.
The visiting Laredo Martin Tigers offense regrouped and marched down the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium turf for a 69 yard touchdown drive culminating with a five yard touchdown keeper by standout Tigers quarterback Albert Estrada and the point after attempt was good, giving the Tigers a 7 -6 lead with 1:27 left in the first quarter which they would never relinquish the rest of the game.
Early in the second quarter, the Mavericks punted to the Tigers from deep in their territory and the Tigers punt returner broke loose through the Mavericks punting team and returned the football to the Mavericks 15 yard line giving the Tigers excellent field position. The Tigers quickly capitalized on their exellent field position as Tigers running back Alexis Navarro scored on a five yard scamper with 9:29 left in the second quarter and the point after attempt was good, giving the Tigers a 14-6 lead.
After a Mavericks possession resulting in four plays and punt, the Tigers took possession deep in their territory at the 16 yard line but drove down the field on an 84 yard touchdown drive culminating on a 69 yard touchdown pass from Tigers quarterback Albert Estrada to Tigers wide receiver Daniel Sanchez who slipped behind the Mavericks defensive secondary and raced untouched for the touchdown and the extra point attempt was good, giving the Tigers a solid 21-6 lead with 4:35 left in the second quarter.
Both teams exchanged possessions and punts the latter of the second period unable to score, taking a halftime score of 21-6 in favor of the Tigers. The Thundering Mavericks Marching Band performed an excellent halftime show and the Mavericks Silver Dance Team entertained the loyal Maverick Nation fans in attendance.
Early in the third-quarter, the Mavericks recovered a Tigers fumble but were unable to capitalize on it punting the ball back to the Tigers. The Tigers took possession of the football deep in their territory at the 19 yard line and orchestrated an 81 yard touchdown drive culminating on a 20 yard touchdown sprint by Tigers quarterback Albert Estrada with 2:15 left in the third-quarter and the point after attempt was no good, giving the Tigers an insurmountable 27-6 lead.
The never say die Mavericks took possession of the football at their 20 yard line after the Tigers kick-off with 2:05 left in the third-quarter and promptly executed an 80 yard touchdown drive culminating with a five yard touchdown run by Mavericks running back Deion Alonso with 10:51 left in the fourth quarter and the point after attempt was good narrowing the score 27-13.
The Laredo Martin Tigers took the ensuing kick-off and returned it to the Mavericks 49 yard line and the Mavericks were penalized 15 yards for a personal foul giving the Tigers excellent field position at the Mavericks 34 yard line with 10:41 left in the fourth period. The Tigers offense took advantage of their excellent field position and scored another touchdown on a two yard run by Tigers running back Alexis Navarro and the point after attempt failed, giving the Tigers a solid 33-13 lead with 6:31 left in the final stanza.
Neither team could score after exchanging a pair of possessions and punts in the latter of the fourth quarter with the game ending 33-13 in favor of the Tigers, causing the Mavericks to fall to 1-1 overall in the season.
Laredo Martin Tigers Head Football Coach and native Eagle Passan David Charles was elated with the Tigers victory over his former school, C. C. Winn High School. C. C. Winn Mavericks Head Football Coach Eric Villasenor said the Mavericks will learn and improve from this game to prepare for District 29-5A competition.
The C. C. Winn Mavericks next play the Laredo Nixon Mustangs on Friday, September 13th, at 7:30 P.M. at the Laredo Independent School District Shirley Field in another non-district game. The loyal Maverick Nation fans are invited and encouraged to travel to Laredo and support the thundering Mavericks in their game against the Laredo Nixon Mustangs and cheer them on to victory.
