The Eagle Pass C.C. Winn High School Mavericks stampeded the Laredo LBJ High School Wolves 28-7 in a District 29-5A football game featuring the first father and son head coach match-up between Laredo LBJ Head Football Coach Oscar “Oki” Villasenor (father) and C.C. Winn Head Football Coach Eric Villasenor (son) in Eagle Pass football history on Thursday, October 24, 2013, at the Laredo United Independent School District Student Activity Complex in Laredo, Texas.
The historic encounter between Oki Villasenor and his son, Eric Villasenor, is another milestone in the football annals of Eagle Pass. Father and son congratulated and hugged each other after the game.
The C.C. Winn Mavericks jumped to a 14-0 halftime lead stifling the Laredo LBJ Wolves offense on the ground and in the air to dominate the game and later adding two touchdowns in the second-half to take a commanding 28-0 lead before the Wolves scored a touchdown of their own late in the game to avoid the shutout.
With the key District 29-5A victory against the Laredo LBJ Wolves, the Mavericks improve to 2-6 overall in the season and earn their first District 29-5A win in 2013 for new Head Coach Eric Villasenor to go 1-3 in district standings.
The Mavericks struck paydirt late in the first quarter with a 50 yard touchdown pass from standout Mavericks quarterback Juan Elizondo to standout Mavericks wide receiver Carlos Cerezo and the point after attempt by Mavericks kicking specialist Dante Valdez was good to make it 7-0 in favor of the Mavericks.
In the second quarter, the Mavericks defense dominated the Laredo LBJ Wolves ground attack forcing the Wolves to take to the air, but Mavericks defensive back Michael Santillano intercepted a Wolves pass giving the Mavericks excellent field position at the Wolves 35 yard line.
The opportunistic and hungry Mavericks stampeded into the end zone on a one yard touchdown sneak by Mavericks quarterback Juan Elizondo late in the second quarter and the extra point attempt by Dante Valdez split the uprights giving the Mavericks a 14-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Mavericks took off where they had left in the first-half orchestrating a long touchdown drive midway in the third quarter through their patented ground attack culminating on an eight yard touchdown scamper by standout Mavericks tailback Deion Alonso and Dante Valdez’s point after attempt was good giving the Mavericks a solid 21-0 lead in the third period.
The Mavericks defense stuffed the Laredo LBJ Wolves ground game the whole night causing the Wolves to pass, but Mavericks standout linebacker Chris Aranda intercepted a Wolves errant pass and returned the football to the Wolves’ own 22 yard line. The thundering Mavericks offense went straight to work and on the first play from the line of scrimmage, Mavericks running back Deion Alonso eluded several Wolves would-be tacklers and scooted into the end zone on a 22 yard touchdown run and the Mavericks extra point attempt by Dante Valdez was good, providing the Mavericks a comfortable 28-0 lead late in the third stanza.
The Laredo LBJ Wolves never gave up and continued clawing throughout the game and their perseverance paid off in the fourth quarter with a one yard touchdown quarterback sneak by Wolves quarterback Arturo Jasso and the point after attempt was good, narrowing the score 28-7 late in the third quarter.
Both teams’ defenses dominated the fourth quarter resulting in a Mavericks 28-7 victory over the Laredo LBJ Wolves in a key District 29-5A contest as Mavericks Head Football Coach Eric Villasenor earns his first district win over his own father, Laredo LBJ Wolves Head Football Coach Oscar “Oki” Villasenor.
