Eagle Pass Eagles host C. C. Winn Mavericks in 8th Annual City Football Championship

The mighty Eagle Pass High School Eagles host their cross-town rival thundering C. C. Winn High School Mavericks in the eighth annual City Football Championship in the regular season final game this Friday, November 8, 2013, at 7:30 P.M. at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium in District 29-5A action. A full house is expected this Friday at the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium as both teams’ loyal fans, students, and public enjoy the annual City Football Championship game between the Eagles and Mavericks, affectionately called “The Menudo Bowl.”
The Eagle Pass Eagles under the leadership of Head Coach Tom Gonzalez enter the City Championship game with an overall record of 3-5 and 3-2 in District 29-5A standings while the C. C. Winn Mavericks are under the leadership of Head Coach Eric Villasenor and are entering the game with an overall season record of 2-7 and 1-4 in District 29-5A action. With the fictional City Championship at stake, records do not matter and count when the Eagles and Mavericks battle in their annual football game.
While the Eagles are 7-0 in the local City Championship series against the newer C. C. Winn Mavericks football program, the thundering Mavericks are surely to play valiantly and competitively in seeking to win their first City Championship as well as the Eagles, too. Both teams will play with the highest sportsmanship and respect for the game of football and the community.
The Eagles are coming into the game fresh off a 10-0 win over their arch-rival and District 29-5A nemesis Del Rio Rams on Friday, November 1st in Del Rio. The Eagles will be led offensively by standout quarterback Ty Chisum, running backs DeShawn Franklin and Mark Venegas, standout wide receiver R.J. Ruiz, and fellow wide receivers Chris Perez, Alex Martinez, and Riche Gonzalez while anchored by the offensive line of Leonardo Lopez, Tito Sanchez, Iram Gaytan, Juan Martinez, and Alexander Mason.
On defense, the Eagles will be led by standout middle linebacker Armando “Mando” Lopez and linebacking corps including Rudy Valdez, Chris Flores, Julian Castaneda, Gus Perez, and Roberto Rodriguez while the defensive line features brothers Rolando and Jesus Fernandez, Alex Hinojosa, and Gus Perez and the secondary includes standout R.J. Ruiz, Jesse Mata, Kevin Chisum, Carlos Rodriguez, and DeShawn Franklin.
The visiting Mavericks will enter the game coming from a loss to the Laredo United Longhorns on Friday, November 1st and are spearheaded on offense by standouts quarterback Juan Elizondo and tailback Deion Alonso, running back Chris Aranda, and H-backs Carlos Cerezo and David Garza while the wide receiving corps include Emilio Hinojosa, Hector Bermea, and Ezequiel Navejas, and the offensive line is anchored by Kevin Canizales, Marcelino Olivarez, Adrian Botello, Miguel De La Cruz, and Reymundo Riza.
While on defense, the Mavericks are led by standout middle linebacker Steven Garcia and the linebacking wrecking crew of George Andrade, Chris Aranda, and Justin Diaz, and the defensive line is anchored by Marco Ramirez, Victor Miranda, and Jose Luis Flores, and the secondary will be patrolled by Carlos Cerezo, Rene Rodriguez, Luis Huerta, and Michael Santillano.
Tickets for the Eagles versus Mavericks football game this Friday, November 8th, at 7:30 P.M. are available at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Athletic Department Office at the EPISD Student Activity Center. The public is invited to attend and cheer both the Eagles and Mavericks in what promises to be another exciting City Football Championship game.
