Walgreens to Open in Eagle Pass

Eagle Pass’ dynamic growth continues in 2014 as Walgreens has announced its plans to construct and operate a full-fledged Walgreens pharmacy and dry goods store in Eagle Pass, said Brian M. Shea, City of Eagle Pass Planning and Building Director.
Walgreens is about to start construction in Eagle Pass as the City of Eagle Pass has issued it a construction permit for the building of this new business that will be located on Main Street,adjacent next to the IBC Bank-Eagle Pass headquarters in front of the Maverick County Lake.
Walgreens is the largestdrug retailing chain in the United States. As of December 11, 2013, the company operated 8,582 stores in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam. It was founded in Chicago, Illinois, in 1901. Walgreens headquarters are in the Chicago suburb of Deerfield, Illinois.
City Planning and Building Director Brian M. Shea advised the Eagle Pass City Council of this development during his monthly report at the City Council meeting held on January 7, 2014.
“We anticipate the issuance of the construction permit for the new Walgreens to be issued this week and that this is just an indicator of the commercial growth in our community,” said Shea.
Shea also advised the Eagle Pass City Council that 2013 was a good year seeing a moderate increase in single family residential construction, duplexes, apartment complex construction and other smaller projects within the Eagle Pass city limits.
Shea stated that there had been several large commercial construction projects such as the Maverick Arms expansion which brought significant amount of fees to the City of Eagle Pass through permits issued and the new Tractor Supply Store as well.
The City Planning Department is also working in conjunction with Main Street Program Director Joe Cruz to strategize an economic development strategy for the City to maximize its resources and the opportunities which may become available in 2014.
The City Planning Department is also scheduled to meet with the architect assigned to the Eagle Pass Public Library renovation project to conduct a scoping meeting to go over the plans for the renovations in late January or early February.
The City of Eagle Pass Planning and Building Department is currently finalizing the filling of two available positions for Assistant Planning Director and Building Inspector.
