“True Colors,” LGBTQ Pride Festival Slated for August 1-3 in Eagle Pass
In an effort to promote diversity and acceptance within our community for LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Questioning) citizens, the Maverick County LGBTQ Association has organized a Pride Weekend. “Pride” is celebrated all around the world creating unity, embracing diversity, and recognizing the contributions of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered people. “This event is the first of its kind locally,” states Association Member Luis Ruiz, “…our overall goal is to gain visibility as a social group, build community, and celebrate diversity and gender variance.” Volunteers are working tirelessly to ensure the event makes a positive impact on people’s perceptions of the gay community. Organizer Roger Chavez believes that an event of this nature is right on time, “We are excited about the support we have received from local businesses and the general public. We want every LGBTQ resident to know that they can feel safe to express who they are in a community where they can contribute and thrive in.” The festivities begin on Friday August 1st with the Pride Weekend Kickoff Party at Santo Grial on N. Veterans Blvd. The celebration will continue on Saturday August 2 at 7pm at Shelby Park, with a free Health Fair leading into the Official Pride Festival. Food vendors will also be on site, cooking up savory antojitos. Live bands will perform from 8pm-11pm, followed by an unforgettable Drag Queen Showcase. A free picnic potluck lunch is scheduled for Sunday August 3rd, from 11am-2pm at Historic Fort Duncan Park. Patrons are asked to bring lawn chairs and picnic blankets to the Festival and Picnic; ice chests and alcoholic beverages will not be allowed at and are strictly prohibited.
