The Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Mavericks fell to the Laredo LBJ High School Wolves 28-14 in their 2014 Texas high school season opener on Friday, August 29, 2014, at the Laredo United Student Activity Complex in Laredo, Texas, in the battle between father and son coaches, Oscar “Oki” Villasenor of Laredo LBJ and Eric Villasenor of C. C. Winn.
The Mavericks received the opening game kick-off but fumbled the football on the return with Laredo LBJ pouncing on the football at the Mavericks own 26 yard line with only seconds into the game.
The Laredo LBJ Wolves capitalized on the Mavericks fumble with a quick score on a 20 yard touchdown run by Wolves running back Juan Cisneros with 10:44 minutes left in the first quarter and taking an early 7-0 lead in the game.
The Laredo LBJ Wolves secured a second touchdown in the first quarter on a one yard keeper by quarterback Ernesto Rodriguez to take a 14-0 lead.
The Mavericks regrouped and drove down the field for a touchdown on a quarterback Juan Elizondo four yard scamper into the end zone and Dante Valdez point after attempt was good to narrow the score 14-7 in the second quarter.
The Mavericks defense held the Wolves on their next possession and the Mavericks offense went to work. The Mavericks marched down the SAC artificial turf for a second touchdown on another quarterback Juan Elizondo’s keeper from the two yard line and Dante Valdez extra point was good to tie the game late in the second quarter, 14-14 each.
Just as the Mavericks defense appeared to handle the Wolves, the Wolves running back Alejandro Verestegui broke loose on a 68 yard run into the Mavericks end zone and the point after attempt was good with 1:53 minutes left before halftime to give the Wolves a 21-14 lead at intermission.
In the second half, the homestanding Laredo LBJ Wolves tightened their grip on Mavericks standout running back Deion Alonso and quarterback Juan Elizondo to deny the Mavericks from scoring, including stopping Maverick quarterback Juan Elizondo on a keeper at the Wolves three yard line on a fourth and goal with seven minutes left in the third quarter.
The Wolves added a fourth touchdown and a point after attempt in the third quarter to take a commanding 28-14 lead early in the second half, a lead which they never relinquished.
Laredo LBJ Wolves Head Coach Oki Villasenor avenged last year’s loss to his son, Eric Villasenor of C. C. Winn, to even the father and son series at one win each. “It is bittersweet beating my son, but I feel great for our kids,” said Wolves Head Coach Oki Villasenor.
The Mavericks will regroup and focus on their next regular season non-district game against the Carrizo Springs High School Wildcats on Friday, September 5th, at 7:30 P.M. at Carrizo Springs.
