Five Killed in Head-On Auto Accident on Highway 57 in Zavala County

The Texas Department of Transportation Office in Laredo, Texas announced that five people were killed in a head-on automobile accident between two pick-up trucks on Thursday, February 26, 2015, approximately five miles east of Batesville, Texas in Zavala County.
According to the preliminary investigation report, one family is from Eagle Pass believed to be a husband and wife while the second family is from Crystal City, Texas including the parents and a child. The identities of the deceased have not been released as their next of kin are being notified of their demise. Two other persons were airlifted to a San Antonio hospital for medical treatment.
The tragic accident caused Highway 57 to be temporarily closed to allow law enforcement authorities and emergency personnel to investigate and attend to the people injured or killed at the accident. Traffic through Highway 57 was temporarily rerouted to FM 140 in Frio County, Texas.
The tragic accident is under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Zavala County Sheriff’s Department.
