The mighty Eagle Pass High School Lady Eagles will face the potent New Braunfels Canyon High School Lady Cougars in a best of three series for the 2015 University Interscholastic League (UIL) Region IV-6A Softball Semi-Finals Championship during Friday-Saturday, May 22-23, 2015, at St. Mary’s University Softball Field in San Antonio, Texas.
Game 1 of the best of three series is scheduled for Friday, May 22nd, at 7 P.M. while Game 2 is set for Saturday, May 23rd, at 3 P.M., and Game 3, if necessary, will follow 30 minutes after Game 2.
The Eagle Pass Lady Eagles defeated the Edinburg High School Lady Bobcats last week in the Regional Quarter-Finals Championship by sweeping them in two consecutive games to advance to this week’s Regional Semi-Finals Championship against the New Braunfels Canyon Lady Cougars. The Lady Eagles sport an overall season record of 25-9.
The New Braunfels Canyon Lady Cougars also swept last year’s final four finalist San Antonio Southwest High School Lady Dragons in two consecutive games to earn the right to face the Eagle Pass Lady Eagles. The Lady Cougars enter into the Regional Semi-Finals with an overall season record of 16-1.
The Lady Eagles will rely on standout senior southpaw pitcher Krystal De La Cruz to muzzle the Lady Cougars batters and will need to play error-free defense to stop the Lady Cougars from scoring. The Lady Cougars also rely on their freshman standout pitcher who has already verbally committed to play for the University of Oklahoma Sooners. This series will be a pitchers duel.
The Lady Eagles on offense will feature leadoff hitter and second baseman Melanie Mendoza, left-fielder Sairah Gonzalez, short stop Heather Ruiz, first baseman Dariela Velasquez, catcher Nina Flores, third baseman Miryam Salinas, center fielder Lysandra Gonzalez, right fielder Amanda Appleton, pitcher Krystal De La Cruz, and designated hitter Anna Aguado to produce runs in order to defeat the Lady Cougars.
The winner between the Lady Eagles and Lady Cougars semi-finals playoff series will play the winner of the San Antonio O’Connor Highs School Lady Panthers and San Benito High School Lady Greyhounds in the Regional Championship for a berth in the State Championship Tournament in Austin, Texas.
This is the second consecutive year that the Lady Eagles have qualified for the Regional Semi-Finals Championship. Last year, the Lady Eagles fell to the San Marcos High School Lady Rattlers in a hard-fought series. The Lady Eagles seek to advance to the Regional Championship and the State Championship. However, they are taking one game at a time and one series at a time.
The Lady Eagles are under the direction of Head Coach Oscar Ruiz.
All Eagle Pass softball aficionados throughout Texas are invited to attend the Lady Eagles playoff series against the New Braunfels Canyon Lady Cougars this week and cheer them on to victory.
