Eagle Pass C. C. Winn Mavericks lassoed by Medina Valley Panthers 28-7

The Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School thundering Mavericks were lassoed by the visiting Medina Valley High School Panthers 28-7 in a key District 29-5A football game on Friday, October 2, 2015, at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium in Eagle Pass, Texas, falling to 2-3 overall in the season and 1-1 in District standings.
The Panthers struck early in the first quarter on a 21 yard touchdown pass with 3:56 minutes remaining in the stanza and the point after attempt failed taking a 6-0 lead.
The Panthers stout defense stymied the Mavericks potent offense during the first half of the game.
The Panthers offense marched down the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium turf on a 45 yards touchdown drive culminating on a two yard TD pass to wide receiver Zach Griggs and the two point conversion was good via another pass with 8:41 minutes remaining in the second quarter, taking a 14-0 lead over the Mavericks.
Late in the second quarter, the Panthers capitalized on a short Mavericks punt to start a 45 yards touchdown drive resulting in a 30 yards TD pass and the extra point was good giving the Panthers a solid 21-0 lead over the Mavericks with only 1:06 minutes remaining in the second period. The Panthers took a 21-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Mavericks staunch defense stopped the potent Panther offensive machine during most of the second-half except on one short 19 yards drive which the Panthers intercepted an errant pass of Mavericks Quarterback Reyes Lopez. The Panther quickly scored after the interception on a 19 yards touchdown pass to wide receiver Tristan Shivers and the point after attempt was good with 6:56 minutes remaining in the third quarter, giving the Panthers an insurmountable 28-0 lead.
The proud Mavericks offense marched down the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium turf and engineered an 81 yards touchdown drive culiminating with a one yard keeper into the end zone by Mavericks Quarterback Reyes Lopez and the extra point was good with 24 seconds remaining in the third quarter, narrowing the score 28-7 in favor of the Panthers.
The fourth quarter was a defensive battle as both teams’ defenses shut down the opposing offenses, resulting in a Panthers win 28-7 over the Mavericks.
The C. C. Winn Mavericks will regroup and now prepare for next week’s key District 29-5A game against the Uvalde High School Coyotes on Friday, October 9, 2015, at 7:30 P.M. at the legendary Honey Bowl in Uvalde, Texas.
