Sheriff Tom Schmerber announces Candidacy for Re-Election
Sheriff Tom Schmerber has authorized the Eagle Pass Business Journal to announce his candidacy for re-election to the position of Sheriff of Maverick County.
“It seems like only yesterday I took the oath of office to proudly serve as your Sheriff. I have been afforded the privilege and opportunity to serve the residents of Eagle Pass and Maverick County for the past three years. It has truly been an honor, one that could not have been done without your help. Today, I ask for your help once again as I prepare for a re-election campaign this year,” said Sheriff Schmerber.
Mr. Schmerber is a life-long resident of Eagle Pass, Texas and is married to Blanca Medrano Schmerber, a classroom teacher employed with the Eagle Pass Independent School District for twenty-six years. Their daughter, Bianca Nicole, is a student at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. The son of the late Santiago Schmerber, Jr. and the late Martina Garay Schmerber, Mr. Schmerber is a 1971 graduate of Eagle Pass High School. He has an undergraduate degree in Political Science from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) and a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Sul Ross State University. “I am proud to say that aside from my career in law enforcement, I was also an employee of the Eagle Pass Independent School District for twelve years,” said Schmerber.
“That being said, the majority of my professional career has been in what I find to be my greatest passion, law enforcement. In 1982, I began my career with the United States Border Patrol, where I was stationed in Presidio, Texas for two years before returning to Eagle Pass as an agent, supervisor, and later as a Watch Commander until my retirement in 2008. I received extensive training that, amongst other topics, covered integrity and ethics, constitutional law, human rights, and preventing corruption. On two separate occasions, I was honored to have served as a law instructor at the United States Border Patrol Academy in Glynco, Georgia. Those twenty-six years as an agent and instructor, coupled with my three years as your Sheriff, have afforded me the experiences and means to demonstrate my administrative capabilities,” said Schmerber.
“I strongly feel this administration has demonstrated those capabilities with the opportunities provided. We’ve rebuilt this department with the core values that I have spoken of in the past: honesty, transparency, and respect. We’ve created a culture of change that reflects those values, one that Maverick County can be proud of,” said Schmerber.
“I can assure you that the safety and security of all residents remains a top priority. Our officers have played a crucial role in community outreach efforts to help create a drug-free environment for our youth. We’ve reached out to law enforcement agencies, including those in Mexico, to improve communications and assist one another in curtailing crime in our region. Additionally, our open-door policy allows the public to voice its concerns and gives this office insight as to what the true needs of our citizenry are,” said Schmerber.
“While this administration has not been spared of the issues that Maverick County has faced, we have continued to move forward with the funds made available. We are actively seeking funds from alternative sources and have recently been awarded funds that are category specific but are still of much needed use to the department. We also remain in constant communication with neighboring counties seeking space to house inmates in an effort to generate additional funds.”
“At this time, I am humbly asking for your vote and support in the upcoming Texas Democratic Party Primary Election for re-election as your Sheriff. Early voting commences on February 16 at the Multi-Purpose Center and runs through February 26. Election day is March 1. I thank you for your consideration and support and invite you to be a part of our team. Let’s do our part to help continue moving Maverick County forward,” concluded Sheriff Schmerber.
