The thundering Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Lady Mavericks were swept in two closely contested games by the Corpus Christi CalAllen High School Lady Wildcats in the 2016 UIL Region IV, 6A Class, Bi-District Championship during April 27-28, 2016 at San Antonio, Texas, ending an outstanding 2016 season under first year Head Coach J.J. Iracheta.
Game 1: CalAllen 2, Winn 1
In Game 1 of the best of three series played on Thursday, April 27th, the C. C. Winn Lady Mavericks jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning in a pitcher’s duel between standout Lady Maverick hurler Connie Hernandez and Lady Wildcat ace pitcher K. Jones, but the Lady Wildcats scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead, which they never relinquished to edge the Lady Mavericks 2-1. Lady Mavs standout shortstop Cassandra Flores belted two hits and an RBI to lead the Lady Mavericks offense in Game 1.
Game 2: CalAllen 6, Winn 1
In Game 2 of the series, the CalAllen Lady Wildcats jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Lady Mavericks starting pitcher Brittany Perez and later added three more runs in the top of the second inning and another two runs in the top of the third inning to take a commanding 6-0 lead. The Lady Mavericks battled back and scored one run in the bottom of the third inning to narrow the score 6-1. The Lady Mavs rally fell short despite relief pitcher Connie Hernandez’s shut out of the Lady Wildcats for the remaining final four innings to keep the final score 6-1.
The Lady Mavericks played their hearts out, but it was not meant to to be on this series as the Lady Wildcats pitching stifled the Lady Mavs potent bats and got the timely hits to earn the Bi-District Championship. The Lady Mavericks won the praise and admiration of their coaches, teammates, Lady Wildcats, parents, and fans for their courageous play and character during the series.
