The thundering Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Mavericks opened the 2016 Texas High School Football Season with a crushing win over host Crystal City High School Javelinas 45-20 on Friday, August 26, 2016, at Crystal City, Texas.
The Mavericks Offense dominated the Javelinas defense during the football kick-off classic while the Defense stifled the explosive Javelinas offense, limiting the Hawgs to only 20 points.
The host Crystal City Javelinas jumped to an early lead in the first quarter with a pair of rushing touchdowns, taking a 12-0 lead after the first quarter.
The Mavericks offense began clicking in the second quarter orchestrating two long drives resulting in a one yard touchdown run by Mavericks Quarterback Julio Ruiz and a 32 yard touchdown pass from Julio Ruiz to wide receiver Ruben Esquivel, as well as a two point conversion on a pass from Julio Ruiz to tight end Jose Rodriguez to take command of the game 15-7 at halftime. The Mavericks defense stifled the explosive Javelina ground game in the second quarter.
Early in the third quarter, the Mavericks offense struck pay dirt with a 35 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Julio Ruiz to wide receiver Ruben Esquivel while the two point conversion attempt failed, increasing the lead to 21-12.
The never say die Javelinas stormed back with a long drive resulting in a 59 yard touchdown run and their two point conversion was good to close the score to 21-20 in favor of Mavericks.
Just as the Javelinas aficionados were sensing momentum in the game to shift, standout Maverick quarterback Julio Ruiz busted loose for a 40 yard touchdown run and the point after attempt was good to make the score 28-20 in favor of Mavericks.
Seeking to change the momentum of the game, the Javelinas departed from their strength, ground game, and took to the air but standout Mavericks defensive back Rene Auces swept an aerial bomb and returned it 38 years for an apparent touchdown but was called on a personal foul, denying the touchdown return. The Mavericks offense picked off where their defense provided them possession and engineered a short drive to the end zone with a 30 yard touchdown pass from Quaterback Julio Ruiz to wide receiver Gilberto Rodriguez and the point after attempt was good to light up the score board 35-20 in favor of Mavericks.
The Mavericks added another score in the fourth quarter on a long drive resulting in an one yard touchdown run by standout Mavericks running back Omar Hinojosa and the extra point was good to make the score 42-20, but the home team Crystal City Official Score Keeper reported the final score incorrectly as 45-20.
The Mavericks go 1-0 to start the season as they prepare for next week’s showdown with the perennially tough Laredo LBJ High School Wolves, featuring the marquee matchup between father and son head coaches: LBJ’s Oscar “Oki” Villasenor and Winn’s Eric Villasenor.
