Eagle Pass C. C. Winn Mavericks clawed by Floresville Tigers 20-16 in District 29-5A action

The thundering Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Mavericks were clawed by the Floresville High School Tigers in a key District 29-5A football game on Friday, October 28, 2017, causing a three-way tie for first place in District 29-5A as Winn, Floresville, and Uvalde all now sport a 3-1 District mark with one game remaining in the regular season. The Mavericks fall to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in District 29-5A standings.
The usual explosive Mavericks offense struggled during the first half while the thunder and lightning Mavericks defense played extraordinary throughout the game, particularly in the first half by stopping the Tigers offense on three occasions within the red zone and limiting them to only one touchdown and two field goals to trail 13-7 at half-time.
The Mavericks potent offense took the opening second half kick-off and engineered a perfect touchdown drive and the point after attempt was good to give the Mavericks a 14-13 lead early in the third quarter.
The Tigers managed to score on a 39 yard touchdown pass from Quarterback Darian Mayberry to Wide Receiver Colton Paine and the point after attempt was good to retake the lead 20-14 with 11:49 minutes remaining in the Fourth Quarter.
The Mavericks stout defense stopped the Tigers with a safety to narrown the score 20-16 with 1:58 minutes left in the game and possession of the football for a last minute potential game winning drive, but the Mavericks drove down to the Tigers 19 yard line but the Tigers secondary intercepted a Mavericks pass in the end zone with only eight seconds left in the game to preserve the hard fought victory over the previously district undefeated Mavericks.
The Mavericks final game of the season is against co-leading Uvalde Coyotes on Thursday, November 3, 2016, at 7 P.M. At the Eagle Pass Independent School District Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium for possibly the District 29-5A Championship or Co-Championship depending how the Floresville Tigers do against the San Antonio Southside Cardinals.
