The Battle of the Border: C.C. Winn Mavericks vs. Laredo Nixon Mustangs Area Football Championship Game

The 2016 Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Mavericks Football Team’s history making season continues this Friday, November 18, 2016 with the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Region IV, Division I 5A Area Championship game against the Laredo Nixon High School Mustangs at 7:30 P.M. at the Eagle Pass Independent School District’s Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium, dubbed “The Battle of the Border.”
The C. C. Winn Mavericks earned the school’s first-ever District 29-5A Football Co-Championship and Bi-District Championship this 2016 season after 11 years competing as a full-fledge high school under the leadership of Head Football Coach Eric Villasenor and his Assistant Coaches.
The Mavericks come into “The Battle of the Border” Football Championship with a school-best record of 9-2 while the Laredo Nixon Mustangs enter with an impressive 10-1 record. “The Battle of the Border” Football Championship game promises to be the game of the season in Eagle Pass and Maverick County during 2016, surpassing the famed C.C. Winn Mavericks versus Eagle Pass Eagles game because this is for the Area Championship.
Tickets for the C. C. Winn Mavericks versus Laredo Nixon Mustangs Area Football Championship game are now on sale at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Athletics Office located at the EPISD Student Activity Center at a cost of $7 for Adults ($8 at the Gate) and $4 for students through Friday, November 18th. All tickets are General Admission seats as there are no reserved seating available.
The thundering Mavericks Offense will rely on standout Quarterback Julio Ruiz, running backs Danny Rios and Omar Hinojosa, wide receivers Ruben Esquivel and Alonso Cardona, tight end Jose Rodriguez, tailback Carlos Tijerina, and the huge offensive line to light up the score board against the Laredo Nixon Mustangs.
The heralded thunder and lightning Mavericks Defense led by standout Safety Rene Auces, defensive linemen Carlos Tijerina and Jacob Guerra, linebackers Ernesto Villasenor and Alberto Duran, and secondary Raul Gomez and Rey Vasquez will be called upon to stop the powerful Laredo Nixon Mustangs balanced running and passing games and shut out the Mustangs from reaching the Mavericks end zone.
The C. C. Winn Mavericks road to the 2016 Area Football Championship against the Laredo Nixon Mustangs started with their first regular season game against the Crystal City Javelinas on August 26th with an impressive road victory 45-20; followed with a win over the Laredo LBJ Wolves 21-0 during Parent’s Night on September 2nd; a heart-breaking loss to cross-town rival Eagle Pass Eagles 21-12 on September 9th; followed with a convincing win 27-7 over the Mission Eagles on September 16th; a victory over Central Catholic Buttons 27-14 on September 23rd; a win over the San Antonio McCollum Cowboys 34-26 on October 7th; followed with a win over the San Antonio Southside Cardinals 14-13 on October 14th; a victory over San Antonio Harlandale Indians 27-24 on October 21st; another heart-breaking loss to the Floresville Tigers 20-16 on October 28th; a resounding win over the Uvalde Coyotes 31-0 on November 3rd during Homecoming Festivitives and earning the school’s first-ever District Football Co-Championship; and a historic win over the Corpus Christi Carroll Tigers 21-14 on November 11th to earn the school’s first-ever Bi-District Football Championship. The Mavericks next goal is to win the school’s first-ever Area Championships against the Laredo Nixon Mustangs on November 18th at home.
