State Representative Poncho Nevarez Sworn-In at 85th Texas Legislative Session
(Press Release) The Texas House of Representatives convened Tuesday, January 10th to open the 85th Legislative Session. Representative Poncho Nevàrez was sworn into his third term representing the constituents of House District 74 which includes the communities of Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Fort Stockton, Alpine and Marfa. House District 74 encompasses 12 counties and is the largest district in the House of Representatives.
After the oath of office is taken the Representatives elect a Speaker. Representative Nevàrez was asked to give a speech seconding the nomination of Speaker Straus. The Honorable Joe Straus was re-elected Speaker of the House with a vote of 150-0.
On the second day of the legislative session, the Texas House voted on a set of rules and that will govern their operations in 85th Legislative Session. The Representatives are currently working on drafting legislation and awaiting their new committee assignments. Representative Nevàrez served on the House Committee on Homeland Security and Public Safety, the House Natural Resources Committee, and the influential House Committee on Local and Consent Calendars last session.
