C. C. Winn Lady Mavericks fall in Softball Season Opener to Laredo United Lady Longhorns 8-2

The Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Lady Mavericks fell to the potent Laredo United High School Lady Longhorns 8-2 in the 2017 Softball Season Opener at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Student Activity Center Softball Field on Tuesday, February 14, 2017.
The Lady Mavericks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as standout Lady Mavericks first baseman/pitcher Marychelo Flores slammed a double and freshman Lady Mavericks catcher Briana Soto blasted a triple to the fence, scoring Flores to take a 1-0 lead over the Lady Longhorns.
The Lady Longhorns answered with a solo run of their own in the top of the third inning to tie the game 1-1.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Lady Longhorns busted open the close game with four runs and three costly Lady Mavericks defensive errors to take the lead 4-1, which they never relinquished.
The Lady Mavericks added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning as Marychelo Flores singled and Lady Mavericks Yazmin Martinez singled to plate Flores with the Lady Mavericks second run, narrowing the score 4-2 after four innings of play.
The Lady Longhorns padded their 4-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning with three more runs and another in the top of the seventh inning while the Lady Longhorns pitcher silenced the potent Lady Mavericks hitters to earn the 8-2 non-district win.
Lady Mavericks pitcher Connie Hernandez hurled well but five Lady Mavericks defensive errors contributed to her loss.
Leading the Lady Mavericks offense was Marychelo Flores with 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored, Briana Soto batted 2 for 2 with one RBI, and Yazmin Martinez was 1 for 3 with one RBI.
Lady Mavericks Head Coach J.J. Iracheta looks forward to another winning season and making the state playoffs again.
