Eagle Pass C.C. Winn Lady Mavericks Sweep Flour Bluff Lady Hornets in Bi-District Softball Championship

The Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Lady Mavericks Softball Team swept the Flour Bluff High School Lady Hornets in two consecutive games, 6-1 and 12-9, during Friday and Saturday, April 28-29, 2017 to earn the Texas U.I.L. Region IV, Class 5A Bi-District Championship in Jourdanton, Texas behind the pitching of Connie Hernandez and a total team effort on both offense and defense.
GAME 2, Saturday, April 29th
The Winn Lady Mavericks clinched the Bi-District Championship on Saturday, April 29, 2017 during Game 2 of the best of three series by outlasting the stingy Flour Bluff Lady Hornets 12-9 on a grand slam home run belted by standout freshman catcher Brianna Soto in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Lady Mavericks a lead they would successfully defend for the remainder of the game. The Lady Mavericks offense hit a total of 14 hits in Game 2, including a three for four batting effort by standouts MaryChelo Flores and YaYa Martinez to lead the Lady Mavericks as well as Brianna Soto’s grand slam home run.
Lady Maverick standout pitcher Connie Hernandez hurled a complete seven innings in Game 2 to earn her second consecutive win in two days over the Flour Bluff Lady Hornets, improving her overall season record to 7-5. The Lady Mavericks defense led by standout shortstop Cassandra Flores held the Lady Hornets from scoring additional runs.
Game 2 was a tight affair between the Lady Mavericks and Lady Hornets as both teams played their hearts out with the Lady Mavericks seeking to sweep the series while the Lady Hornets fought to stay alive and force a Game 3, but Lady Maverick catcher Brianna Soto’s grand slam home run swung momentum in favor of the Lady Mavericks.
The loyal Maverick Nation aficionados who traveled to Jourdanton, Texas and supported the Lady Mavericks throughout the weekend series jumped in jubilation and elated as the final out fell in Game 2 crowning the Winn Lady Mavericks as the 2017 Bi-District Champions.
GAME 1, Friday, April 28th
The Winn Lady Mavericks belted a total of nine base hits off the Flour Bluff pitcher in Game 1, including a solo home run blast by standout Lady Maverick MaryChelo Flores, and standout Lady Maverick pitcher Connie Hernandez clipped the potent Lady Hornets batters to earn an exciting 6-1 win on Friday, April 28, 2017, in Jourdanton, Texas.
The Lady Mavericks defense under the leadership of standout shortstop Cassandra Flores and third baseman Daniela Rodriguez limited the Lady Hornets to only one run in the pivotal Game 1 to preserve the victory.
With the Game 1 win, the Lady Mavericks took an important 1-0 lead in the best of three Bi-District Championship series.
The Eagle Pas C. C. Winn Lady Mavericks Softball Team includes Cassandra Flores, Kiana Diaz, Connie Hernandez, MaryChelo Flores, Daniela Rodriguez, Arianna Soto, Brianna Soto, YaYa Martinez, Nissa Salazar, Anissa Garcia, Jazmin Ballones, Martha Garcia, Esmeralda Saucedo, and K. Amaya.
The thundering Lady Mavericks are under the direction of Head Coach J.J. Iracheta and Assistant Coaches Heriberto Roiz, Tony Martinez, Corina Escontrias, and Johnny Hernandez. Athletic Trainer is Dwight Arganbright.
With the Bi-District Championship, the Winn Lady Mavericks now advance to the U.I.L. Region IV, Class 5A Area Championship next week against the Brownsville Veterans Memorial High School Lady Chargers during Friday and Saturday, May 5-6, 2017, at Jouradanton, Texas in a best of three series. Game 1 will be on Friday, May 5th, at 7 P.M. and Game 2 is on Saturday, May 6th, at 1 P.M. and Game 3, if necessary, will be 30 minutes following Game 2.
