Eagle Passans Judith A. Canales and City Councilmember Luis E. Sifuentes attended the 2017 National Association of Latino Elected Officials (NALEO) National Convention held in Dallas, Texas during June 21-24, 2017.
NALEO is the largest national association of Latino elected and appointed officials in the United States and its annual National Convention is the largest gathering of Latino officials.
Among the salient issues discussed at the 2017 NALEO National Convention by experts were Health Care, Education, Jobs, Workforce Training, and Immigration. Latino government officials discussed the challenges and best practices implemented by local, state, and federal government.
A major discussion was held on Texas’ Senate Bill 4 “Sanctuary” City Law impact and enforcement in local, county, and state government concerning anti-immigrant laws. Latino leaders learned about how different states and communities are addressing anti-immigrant laws such as California Proposition 187 and Arizona Senate Bill 1070. A report on Texas’ response to its Senate Bill 4 “Sanctuary” City Law was presented and the current status of litigation in federal court in San Antonio, Texas challenging the constitutionality of Senate Bill 4 was reviewed.
The annual NALEO National Convention also provides leadership and public policy training to Latino publicly elected and appointed officials.
Judith A. Canales served in former President Obama’s Administration with the United States Department of Agriculture in several capacities while Councilmember Luis E. Sifuentes serves on the City of Eagle Pass City Council.
