The thundering Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Mavericks edged the homestanding Laredo LBJ High School Wolves 19-11 in a non-district football game held on Friday, September 8, 2017, at the Laredo United Independent School District Student Activity Complex in Laredo, Texas, improving to 1-1 in the season.
The Mavericks and Wolves tangled in a typical defensive battle game dominated by their defenses in this perennial football series.
The LBJ Wolves scored first in the game on a 26 yard field goal after the Mavericks stampeding defense held them to only three points early in the first quarter, taking a 3-0 lead.
The Mavericks capitalized on a short Wolves punt and took possession of the football at the Wolves 33 yard line and engineered the 33 yard touchdown drive, culminating on a one yard touchdown keeper by Maverick quarterback Ethan Johnston and the point after attempt was blocked and recovered by Wolves linebacker Ricardo Musquiz who returned it 85 yards for a two point conversion, making the score 6-5 in favor of the Mavericks in the first stanza.
The Mavericks stampeding defense rose to the occasion again as they blocked an LBJ Wolves 39 yard field goal attempt just as time expired for half-time, preserving a slim lead 6-5 over the Wolves.
In the third quarter, the Mavericks scored on a 15 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ethan Johnston to tight end Issac Villarreal and the point after attempt was good, extending the Mavericks lead 13-5 over the Wolves.
The LBJ Wolves marched down the field to score on a three yard touchdown run by running back Manny Rodriguez and the two point conversion attempt was stopped by the thundering Mavericks defense tackling Rodriguez in the backfield, maintaining a slight Mavericks lead 13-11 over the Wolves with 7:21 minutes remaining in the game.
With momentum swinging to the homestanding LBJ Wolves in the fourth quarter, the stampeding Mavericks defense was once again called upon to stop the advancing Wolves by limiting them to attempt a 42 yard field goal with 1:02 remaining in the game, which could have given the Wolves the lead if made, but Maverick defensive back Xavier Cerezo blocked the field goal attempt and scooped up the pigskin and returned it for a 57 yard Maverick touchdown, increasing the Mavericks lead 19-11 over the Wolves after the extra point failed due to a bad snap.
The never say die Wolves drove down the field in the final minute of the game, but the Mavericks marauding defense intercepted the Wolves desperation pass as time expired to seal the non-district victory, 19-11 in a hard fought defensive battle.
The Mavericks face their cross-town rivals, Eagle Pass Eagles, next week in the mythical City Championship, also affectionately known as “The Menudo Bowl,” on Friday, September 15, 2017, at 7:30 P.M. at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium.
