The thundering Eagle Pass C. C. Winn High School Mavericks were blanked by the District 30-5A South Division Champion Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial High School Eagles 35-0 in their 2017 Region IV 5A, Division I Bi-District Football Championship on Friday, November 17, 2017, at the Schertz-Cibolo Consolidated Independent School District Lenhoff Stadium in Schertz, Texas.
The Mavericks played hard and hung tough with the District 30-5A South Division Champion Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial Eagles (10-1), but it was not meant to be on this night as the Mavericks offense was shut out by the Eagles defense.
The Mavericks finish the 2017 Football Season with an overall record of 3-8 and now await the 2018 University Interscholastic League Re-Alignment in February to find out if they are going to stay in District 29-5A or be re-aligned into a new 5A District or be elevated to 6A.
After the 2016 Mavericks team loaded with senior players won the District 29-5A Co-Championship, Bi-District Championship, Area Championship, and Regional Semi-Finalist, the 2017 Mavericks team was young and less experienced but competed at a very high level, qualifying for the post-season state playoffs as the fourth place team in District 29-5A.
Head Coach Eric Villasenor and his coaching staff did an outstanding job in developing the young Mavericks during the 2017 season and will look forward to a promising 2018 football season.
The Eagle Pass Business Journal congratulates the Eagle Pass Winn Mavericks on their fourth place finish in District 29-5A and qualifying for the Region IV 5A, Division I Bi-District Football Championship. Go Mavericks!
