Maribel Flores Wins 293rd District Court Judge, David Saucedo and Rudy Bowles Head To Run-Off in Maverick County Judge Race, and Other Election Results

The March 6, 2018 Texas Primary Election is over and history with some candidates winning, some candidates heading for a Run-Off Election on May 22nd, and other candidates lost despite their best efforts. Here are the Maverick County Election results for the Democratic Party.
In the United States House of Representative, Texas District 23, Eagle Passan Judy Canales ran a very strong race and narrowly missed a Run-Off Election against San Antonian Gina Ortiz Jones as San Antonio school teacher Rick Trevino edged Canales for second place and the Run-Off against Ortiz Jones. Judy Canales received 7,454 votes (17.18%) to place third in the crowded five candidate Democratic Primary election while Gina Ortiz Jones received the most votes with 17,939 (41.35%), Rick Trevino placed second with 7,548 votes (17.39%) to earn a Run-Off against Ortiz Jones, Jay Hulings received 6,541 votes (15.07%), and Angelica “Angie” Villescasz received 3,900 votes (8.98%). The Run-Off winner between Gina Ortiz Jones and Rick Trevino will face Republican incumbent Will Hurd in the November 6, 2018 General Election.
For the Texas House of Representatives, District 74, Eagle Pass attorney Poncho Nevarez was unopposed in both the Democratic and Republican Primaries as he garnered a total of 5,308 votes in Maverick County alone. State Representative Nevarez wins re-election to another two year term.
In the hotly contested race for the 293rd Judicial District Court Judge race, Eagle Pass attorney Maribel Flores swept the three counties of Maverick, Dimmit, and Zavala with majority votes to win the post without the need for a Run-Off election over candidates Cecilia A. Mascorro and Ricardo Ramos, both from Eagle Pass. Maribel Flores received 4,592 votes in Maverick County, 1,603 votes in Dimmit County, and 1,564 votes in Zavala County for a grand total of 7,759 votes compared to Cecilia A. Mascorro 1,191 votes in Maverick County, 623 votes in Dimmit County, and 434 votes in Zavala County for a total of 2,248 votes, and Ricardo Ramos received 2,920 votes in Maverick County, 394 votes in Dimmit County, and 333 votes in Zavala County for a total of 3,647 votes. Maribel Flores wins the 293rd Judicial District Judge race since there is no Republican Party opponent in the November 6, 2018 General Election.
For the super contested Maverick County Judge race, incumbent David R. Saucedo was the top vote getter but did not receive a majority having to go to a Run-Off election against second place vote getter Rudy Bowles on May 22nd. David R. Saucedo received a total of 3,276 votes (37.67%) compared to Rudy Bowles with 2,904 votes (33.39%) and Gloria E. Hernandez received 2,516 votes (28.93%). There is no Republican Party candidate. The winner of the Saucedo and Bowles Run-Off election will win the coveted Maverick County Judge post.
In the four candidate Maverick County Commissioner Precinct No. 2 race, incumbent Rosy Cantu received the most votes with 808 (42.02%) compared to Arianna Perez 447 votes (23.24%), Martha Chacon received 415 votes (21.58%), and Everardo “Vera” Ballesteros received 253 votes (13.16%), forcing a Run-Off election between Rosy Cantu and Arianna Perez on May 22nd.
For Maverick County Commissioner Precinct No. 4, incumbent Roberto Ruiz was unopposed in both the Democratic and Republican Parties’ Primaries ensuring re-election to another four year term with a total of 1,326 votes (100%).
In the Maverick County Justice of the Peace Precinct No. 1 race, incumbent Kina Mancha easily won re-election over opponent Eluterio Rodriguez receiving a total of 1,470 votes (72.02%) compared to Rodriguez’s 571 votes (27.96%).
For Maverick County Justice of the Peace Precinct No. 2 race, incumbent Dora Madera placed second with a total of 644 (35.37%) compared to challengers Rosanna “Roxi” Rios with 700 votes (38.44%) and Asalia Casares with 477 votes (26.19%), requiring a Run-Off election between Dora Madera and Rossana “Roxi” Rios on May 22nd.
In the Maverick County Justice of the Peace Precint No. 3, Place 1 race, incumbent David John Castaneda was second vote getter with 638 votes (29.98%) compared to challengers Domingo “Mingo” Rodriguez, Jr. with 952 votes (44.74%) and Jose “Joe” Hernandez received 538 votes (25.28%), forcing a Run-Off election between Domingo “Mingo” Rodriguez, Jr. and Davd John Castaneda on May 22nd.
For Maverick County Justice of the Peace Precinct No. 3, Place 2 race, incumbent Jeannie F. Smith easily wins re-election to another four year term as she was unopposed in both the Democratic and Republican Parties’ Primaries with a total of 152 votes.
In the Maverick County Justice of the Peace Precinct No. 4 race, Tere Hernandez is elected as the new Justice of the Peace Precinct No. 4 with a majority vote of 1,092 votes (58.58%) compared to challengers Orlando J. Escareno with 519 votes (27.84%) and Antonio “Tony” Garcia received 253 votes (13.57%).
For Maverick County Democratic Party Chairman, Acting Chairman Luis Alfonso “Poncho” Ruiz easily wins unopposed with a total of 4,995 votes (100%).
Also handily winning re-election to another four year term as unopposed candidates are 365th Judicial District Court Judge Amado J. Abascal, III with 4,284 votes, Maverick County District Clerk Leopoldo “Polo” Vielma with 5,248 votes (100%), Maverick County Clerk Sara Montemayor with 5,334 votes (100%), and Maverick County Treasurer Rito J. Valdez, III with 5,375 votes.
