Diego Ibarra Becomes the First Golfer in C.C. Winn History to Qualify for State
(PRESS RELEASE) C.C. Winn’s Diego Ibarra has achieved something never before done in the history of C.C. Winn High School, qualifying for the Texas State Golf Championship. He did it with a great performance on Monday and Tuesday at the Golf Club of Texas in San Antonio. Ibarra was the second qualifier at the Region IV Championships held there.
Diego had two bad holes on Day 1 which kept him from coming into the clubhouse with a lead of an incredible 69 after posting five big birdies in his first day of competition.
On Day 2, he had a magnificent run of eleven Pars in a row from Hole #3 to Hole #13 with big putts to secure Par and closed out his round with an incredible up and down from the bunker to secure a two foot birdie coming into the clubhouse.
The round included a great up and down from the bunker on #10 where he drilled an eight foot putt to save par. On #11 he left his approach shot short with the pin at the back of the green with a 50 foot putt for birdie which rolled 12 feet past the hole, but his trust in his putter came back with another incredible par save. Flawless through eleven holes hitting fairways and greens in regulation.
“Even though we had rain on Monday night, Tuesday morning, the greens were hard and fast,” said the Winn junior who was three shots short of making the State Tournament last season, “I had trouble with (Hole #) 14 on both days, but I managed to keep my composure to par 16 and 17 before that bird on 18 to close it out.”
Ibarra has been selected First Team All District in District 29-AAAAA and First Regional Qualifier for the Region IV Championships three consecutive times in his first three years at C.C. Winn High School.
His parents A.D. and Irma, and his sisters Alyssa and Andrea along with all of his support base #teamdiego are immensely proud of his achievements and accomplishments in his short career.
The Junior PGA last summer gave him the opportunity to play against the best players in South Texas and the Junior PGA Championship last year at The Woodlands compounded that.
While this is an historic moment, since it is the first time in Eagle Pass history that an individual golfer has advanced this far since 1983, when Mario De La Cabada managed to advance to the UIL State Golf Tournament, no other individual player has achieved this until today.
Thus history was made as Ibarra becomes the first individual golfer from C.C. Winn High School to qualify for this competition which is to be held in the city of Georgetown on May 14 and 15 at the White Wing Golf Club.
