Eagle Pass Eagles Trounce San Antonio McCollum Cowboys 21-0

The mighty Eagle Pass High School Eagles trounced the visiting San Antonio McCollum High School Cowboys 21-0 in a non-district football game on Friday, September 21, 2018, at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium that was cancelled after one and a half quarters of play with 9:06 minutes remaining in the second quarter due to two consecutive 30 minute lightning delays called by the head referee.
The head referee called the first 30 minutes lightning delay at 8:15 P.M. with nearby lightning and thunderstorms threatening the safety of the players, coaches, students, and fans attending the football game, although it did not actually rain during the game. The second 30 minutes lightning delay was called at 8:45 P.M. and after the nearby lightning and thunderstorms danger did not dissipate, the two teams’ head coaches met and agreed to cancel the football game pursuant to University Interscholastic League (U.I.L.) rules in the best interest of the players, students, coaches, and fans in attendance.
The Eagle Pass Eagles are credited with a 21-0 win over the McCollum Cowboys despite its mutual cancellation by both schools.
The Eagles improve to 4-0 in the season and will commence District 29-6A action next Friday, September 28, 2018 at 7:30 P.M. against the potent Laredo United High School Longhorns in a key district game.
The Eagles tallied their first score in the game on a one yard touchdown dive by running back Saul Peralez after engineering a 66 yards TD drive with 9:27 minutes remaining in the first quarter and placekicker David Lopez added the point after attempt to give the Eagles an early 7-0 lead over the Cowboys.
The Eagles Land Shark defense stifled the Cowboys offense during the game to preclude them from scoring.
The Eagles added a second touchdown after orchestrating a 67 yards touchdown drive, culiminating on a 26 yard TD pass from quarterback Ritchie Luna to wide receiver Rey Mendoza with 55 seconds remaining in the first quarter and placekicker David Lopez added the extra point to extend the Eagles lead 14-0 over the Cowboys.
Eagles Nico Moyeda intercepted a Cowboys aerial pass early in the second quarter to give possession of the football over to the Eagles in excellent field position. The Eagles wasted little time in scoring a third touchdown on a 46 yard TD pass from Ritchie Luna to wide receiver David Lopez (No. 13) with 9:06 minutes remaining in the second quarter while placekicker David Lopez (No. 84) added the extra point to expand the Eagles lead 21-0 over the Cowboys.
After the Eagles third score, the head referee called the first 30 minutes lightning delay in the game and later called another 30 minutes lightning delay that eventually caused the two schools’ head coaches to mutually agree to cancel the game for the safety of the players, coaches, students, and fans in attendance.
