The thundering Eagle Pass C.C. Winn High School Mavericks upset the previously undefeated in District 14-5A play San Antonio Harlan High School Hawks 7-3 in a defensive battle on Friday, October 20, 2018, at San Antonio Northside Independent School District Dub Farris Stadium in San Antonio, Texas, stunning the San Antonio football aficionados.
The Mavericks scored the only touchdown of the game as Mavs linebacker Ricardo Morales intercepted a Harlan Hawks Quarterback Cannon Williams pass and returned it for 55 yards for a pick six touchdown with 1:39 minutes remaining in the First Quarter and Place Kicker Ernesto Fuentes added the Point After Attempt to give the Mavs an early 7-0 lead that would stand for the remaining game as both teams’ defenses dominated their respective offenses.
The stampeding Mavericks defense played outstanding in stifling the explosive Harlan Hawks offense and limiting them to only a field goal throughout the entire game. The Hawks lone score was on a 38 yard field goal by Place Kicker Alejandro Garcia with 56 seconds remaining in the Second Quarter after recovering a Mavericks fumble at the Mavs 20 yard line with 2:07 minutes before halftime. The Mavericks thunder and lightning defense held the Hawks offense from scoring a touchdown, forcing them to take the field goal attempt.
The Mavericks defense was called upon one last time to repel the potent Hawks offense late in the Fourth Quarter with less than five minutes remaining in the game as the Hawks defense held the Mavs fourth down and one yard attempt at the Mavs 35 yard line, giving the Hawks one final possession to score and defeat the Mavs. But the stout Mavericks defense would not have any of it by stopping the Hawks on a pass interception by defensive back German Velasquez at the Mavs 13 yard line with 3:02 minutes remaining in the game. The Mavs offense under Quarterback Ethan Johnston and Running Back Fernando Zapata garnered a first down to run out the clock and preserve the upset victory, handing the Hawks their first District 14-5A loss of the season.
The Mavericks improve to 2-2 in District 14-5A standings with this huge upset victory, rekindling the Mavericks playoff hopes this season with two District games remaining against San Antonio Southwest Legacy Titans and San Antonio Southwest Drgagons. The Mavericks go 5-3 overall in the season with this exciting upset victory.
The Mavericks will enjoy this key victory as they have an open week during October 22-26, 2018 before entertaining the San Antonio Southwest Legacy Titans for Homecoming on November 2, 2018 at 7:30 P.M. at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium.
