After a one year long search process for a new City Manager, the City of Eagle Pass City Council appointed George Antuna of San Antonio, Texas as the new City Manager after conducting several interviews at a special city council meeting held on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, to replace former City Manager Arturo B. Rodriguez who resigned on December 28, 2017.
Assistant City Manager Ivan Morua was appointed as Acting City Manager on January 2, 2018 and served in that capacity until George Antuna was appointed by the City Council as Eagle Pass’s new City Manager at the January 16th meeting.
Morua will return to his previous position of Assistant City Manager and will receive an undisclosed amount of compensation for his services as Acting City Manager in lieu of vacations. The exact amount to be paid to Morua was not made public by Mayor Ramsey English Cantu although it is public information, but was fully discussed and agreed to in Executive Session.
The City Council approved a motion to authorize Mayor Cantu and the Human Resources Department to negotiate an employment agreement with George Antuna at a base salary of $110,000 per year plus benefits and to present it for City Council’s approval at their next meeting.
Local taxpayers had become concerned that the City Council was taking too long in the City Manager selection process and the City lacked consistency in municipal leadership. The City Council fulfilled one of its New Year’s resolutions with the appointment of George Antuna as the new City Manager after a 13 month search process.
