Eagle Pass Represented at First Day of Legislative Session
(Eagle Pass, TX – January 9, 2019) The City of Eagle Pass participated in the first day of the Texas 86th Legislative Session yesterday at the State Capitol.
Mayor Ramsey English-Cantu and the city’s lobbyist Janice Gonzalez and Ernie Gonzalez were on hand to congratulate Senator Peter Flores and Representative Poncho Nevarez during swearing ceremonies in the House and Senate Chambers. During an address before the legislature, Governor Greg Abbott challenged members of both houses to work together to address the state’s most critical issues.
The city’s delegation also congratulated newly elected Speaker of the House Dennis Bonnen of Angleton after being unanimously elected to replace outgoing Speaker Joe Straus.
The city’s delegation visited several members of the House of Representatives and the Senate on the session’s opening day. “I am very excited about this session and we look forward to working with Senator Flores and Representative Nevarez this session,” says Mayor Ramsey English-Cantu. “Eagle Pass’ proximity to the border clearly presents economic development, homeland security, and transportation opportunities that have far-reaching implications throughout the region and state that our legislative delegation can support through the legislative process,” adds Mayor English-Cantu.
EMC Strategy Group will represent the city during the legislative session and work in the spirit of cooperation with the multiple layers of government throughout the region and state. The 86th Texas Legislative Session will run through May 27 with the possibility of a Special Session into the summer. Hot topics to be addressed this session include: school finance, property tax, hot tax, and local governance.
