At a public hearing held on Friday, January 18, 2019, at 8:30 A.M., 365th Judicial District Judge Amado Abascal, III and 293rd Judicial District Judge Maribel Flores jointly appointed Acting Maverick County Auditor Karla Mazuka as the new County Auditor to replace former County Auditor Sandra Watkins, who resigned.
The Maverick County Auditor is appointed by the District Judges within Maverick County as an independent auditor of Maverick County finances and to work with Maverick County Commissioners Court throughout the fiscal year to maintain the County’s finances in compliance with state law.
Mazuka is a veteran of the Maverick County Auditor’s Office as she has worked there for many years under several County Auditors, including as Assistant County Auditor before named Acting County Auditor.
In addition to Mazuka’s appointment, District Judges Abascal and Flores appointed Luis Rodriguez as the Assistant Maverick County Auditor to assist Mazuka and Maverick County Commissioners Court while advising the District Judges of Maverick County’s fiscal year finances.
Watkins was appointed by a three judge panel in 2015 after the two Maverick County District Judges failed to agree on a replacement candidate for former Maverick County Auditor Fidencio Ortiz. Ortiz replaced former Maverick County Auditor Carlos Pereda in 2012.
