With the 2019 Texas high school football season just one week away, the Eagle Pass Winn High School Mavericks are busy getting ready for their opening regular season game against the Crystal City High School Javelinas on Friday, August 30, 2019 by holding their annual Silver and Black Pre-Season Scrimmage on August 17th.
Mavericks Head Football Coach Eric Villasenor and staff got to see for the first time this season how their players and team are developing thus far for the 2019 season at the Silver and Black Pre-Season Scrimmage.
The Mavericks senior-laden offense led by quarterback Ethan Johnston battled against their very own stellar Maverick “Winn the Day” Defense at the scrimmage to gauge their progress, strengths and weaknesses, and what needs to be improved for opening game day.
Head Coach Eric Villasenor in an exclusive interview with the Eagle Pass Business Journal stated “I think the only thing we’re looking for right now is creating and finding our own identity. We’re a senior-heavy ball club with eight starters back on Offense and five on Defense. There are still some holes to fill that we still need to continue to evaluate. There was a lot of effort out here today at the scrimmage. I like what I saw, but we’ll look at the video a little bit closer and see where we’re at heading into Laredo United South.”
The Mavericks will play the Laredo United South Panthers in a scrimmage on Friday, August 23, 2019 at 6:30 P.M. at the Laredo United Student Activity Complex Football Stadium before facing the Crystal City Javelinas in a non-district game on Friday, August 30th, at 7:30 P.M. at home on Parents Night.
Villasenor added that “I think anytime you have three year starters coming back, those are the guys who really got that varsity experience, they got 30 plus games under their belt, kids like Ethan Johnston (quarterback), Jared Roiz (wide receiver), Jaime Rodriguez (offensive linemen), Alex Garcia (linebacker) is another one too, he was First Team All-District also. So all of these guys are key players for us and are going to help us along the way.”
The Mavericks are counting on their seniors to provide leadership and experience during the 2019 season and guide them to a successful season with a state playoff berth.
All loyal Maverick Nation football aficionados are invited to attend and support the Mavericks during the 2019 football season. Go Mavericks!
