City of Eagle Pass signs Sister-City Agreement with Nava, Coahuila
The City of Eagle Pass signed a sister-city agreement with the City of Nava, Coahuila, Mexico on Monday, August 22, 2011, in a ceremony held at the City Council Chambers at the Eagle Pass City Hall, located at 100 S. Monroe Street.
Signing the sister-city agreement were Eagle pass Mayor Ramsey English Cantu and Nava Mayor Aroldo Villarreal Fernandez.
The City of Eagle Pass is interested in developing greater economic and cultural ties to Nava, Coahuila, according to Mayor Cantu. “Nava, Coahuila is home to the new mega-brewery plant of Cerveceria Coahuila, S.A. de C.V., a Grupo Modelo plant which brews and bottles Corona-beer products for exportation to the United States, Canada, and the World,” said Mayor Cantu.
The Grupo Modelo brewery plant in Nava, Coahuila is the largest in the world. Grupo Modelo is building a large industrial park at its brewery site for its suppliers and other businesses.
Nava, Coahuila is also home to the Coca-Cola Bottling plant, considered to be the largest in Latin America.
In addition, Nava, Coahuila is home to the Mineria Carbonifera de Rio Escondido, S.A. de C.V. (MICARE), which does surface and underground coal mining and is a subsidiary of Grupo Acero del Norte, S.A. de C.V. and Altos Hornos de Mexico, S.A. de C.V. (AHMSA). Nava, Coahuila also is home to the Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) two coal-fired electricity plants known as Carbon I and II, which are among the greatest polluters of carbon dioxide and mercury to the United States.
Nava, Coahuila seeks to expand its economic, political, tourism, and cultural ties to Eagle Pass, including the construction of a new railroad bridge between Eagle Pass and Nava, Coahuila near the Radar BAse which will connect Eagle Pass and Nava, Coahuila, including the proposed Dos Republicas Coal Partnership Eagle Pass Mine.
A delegation of City of Eagle Pass officials, including Mayor Cantu, City Manager Daniel Valenzuela, Assistant City Manager Gloria Barrientos, and City Secretary Mary Velasquez, visited Nava, Coahuila on Tuesday, August 23rd, to tour the growing businesses in Nava such as the Grupo Modelo Corona mega-brewery.
