Volunteers, children, and citizens celebrated the 100th Paint the Town Event with the dedication of the Mariana Street baseball and public park in Siesta Acres in Eagle Pass to the memory of former Eagle Pass youth and avid sportsman Hector Muñoz, Jr., who tragically lost his life at age 11 by a drunken driver on New Year’s day in 2005.
Maverick County Commissioner for Precinct 3 Jose Luis Rosales read and presented a proclamation from Maverick County Commissioners Court officially dedicating Mariana Street Park in memory of Hector Muñoz, Jr. at a ceremony on Saturday, March 3, 2012, amidst over 300 attendees.
Diana L. Sanchez was the Master of Ceremony for the 100th Paint the Town Festivities. The Eagle Pass C.C. Winn High School 92nd Air Force Junior ROTC Color Guard presented the colors. The Eagle Pass Junior High Motivational Club presented the Pledge of Allegiance while San Luis Elementary student Ashley Zamago sang the national anthem.
County Commissioner Jose Luis Rosales presented Hector and Teresa Muñoz, parents of Hector Muñoz, Jr., the Maverick County Commissioners Proclamation and the beautiful Hector Muñoz, Jr. Park sign handcrafted and donated by the Eagle Pass High School Building Trade students.
Commissioner Rosales told the over 300 audience members to not drink and drive. Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) representative Sandra Ledesma reiterated the ever so important message of: “Don’t Drink and Drive.”
A youth baseball tournament and a girls fastpitch softball tournament was held. Volunteers and many Girl Scouts of America members painted the Hector Muñoz, Jr. Park while stamping out all the graffiti previously in the park. Commissioner Rosales pointed out that night lights had recently been installed at the park by the county.
