Maverick County Sheriff Deputy Resigns After San Marcos, Texas Incident

On October 11, 2012 an incident involving 2 employees of the Maverick County Sheriff Department, a sheriff deputy and a jailer for the Maverick County Sheriff Department was reported to Sheriff Tomas Herrera.
The incident occurred in San Marcos, Texas when the above mentioned employees were headed back to Maverick County from Oklahoma after picking up and in the process of transferring an inmate. When arriving to San Marcos, Texas the employees stopped to rest and eat lunch at a bar and grill. The deputy’s first error and total misjudgment was not following procedure by taking the inmate out of the vehicle. Secondly, the Deputy Sheriff ordered an alcoholic beverage while on duty. Third, the jailer did not object to the deputy’s actions and by the above actions both employees failed to protect and safeguard the citizens of San Marcos, Texas.
After an internal investigation, Former Deputy Sheriff Gerardo Zuniga resigned as of October 12, 2012, minutes before paperwork was initiated to terminate his employment with the Maverick County Sheriff’s Office. The Jailer was reprimanded and has been suspended from his duties for two weeks without pay.
