The Ryan-Canseco Plan Would Force 107,000 in TX-23 To Pay More for their Medicare
[Press Release]
According to a new House Energy and Commerce Committee report, Congressman Quico Canseco’s (TX-23) budget that ends the Medicare guarantee would force 107,000 constituents to pay more out-of-pocket for their Medicare. The Ryan-Canseco plan makes seniors pay more to give tax breaks to millionaires, corporations that ship jobs overseas and Big Oil. The House and Energy Commerce Committee report found that the Ryan-Canseco budget “will increase the cost of remaining in traditional Medicare by $29,000 over a typical senior’s lifetime” and it would raise prescription drug costs “by an average of more than $9,200.”
“Congressman Quico Canseco voted to make 107,000 seniors in his district who have earned Medicare benefits through a lifetime of hard work to pay more for their health care and 5,700 seniors to pay more for prescription drugs in order to protect tax breaks for millionaires, Big Oil and corporations shipping jobs overseas,” said Jesse Ferguson of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.“This new report confirms what we already know about the Ryan-Canseco: Seniors would be forced to sacrifice, while millionaires would get another tax break.”
For his constituents, the Ryan-Canseco plan to end Medicare would:
- Increase prescription drug costs for 5,700 people currently on Medicare who enter the Part D donut hole
- Eliminate new preventive care benefits for 107,000 current Medicare beneficiaries in the district.
- Force 107,000 of Medicare beneficiaries in the district currently enrolled in Medicare to pay thousands more in premiums.
- Jeopardize nursing home care for 1,400 in the district.
- Place 87,000 seniors at risk of fraud, scams and abuse by cutting $6 billion in consumer protection and law enforcement.

This report comes just on the heels of a new study released by the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation Monday that found that nearly 6 in 10 Medicare beneficiaries would pay more for health care under the Republican plan to end the Medicare guarantee and turn it into a voucher.
