Combat Veteran CPT Joshua Leone to be Congressman Gallego’s Guest for the State of the Union
Washington, D.C.— Combat Veteran CPT Joshua M. Leone, commander of Fort Bliss’ 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, will be the guest of Congressman Pete Gallego during the President’s State of the Union speech on Tuesday evening
“This will be my first State of the Union address as a Member of Congress, and I can think of no better way to underscore the importance of our country’s commitment to its soldiers,” said Congressman Gallego. “My father served in World War II. A military family learns never to forget our troops. It will be a great privilege to have CPT Leone as my guest at the State of the Union. He and his family have sacrificed much for our country.”
Gallego continued, “CPT Leone’s presence will remind me, my fellow members of Congress, and all Americans that we have a duty to the men and women who serve our country. They are America’s heroes – we owe them a great debt – and we should continue to honor them by meeting our obligations when they come home.”
CPT Leone was injured in October, 2011, when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded under his Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle in Afghanistan. CPT Leone’s back, neck, hand, and ankles were broken. He underwent three surgeries and before returning to the Fort Bliss Warrior’s Transition Unit where he remained until May 2012.
Upon returning to the brigade, CPT Leone assumed command of the Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) Brigade’s rear detachment. In October of 2012, CPT Leone took command of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, following the brigade’s return from Afghanistan.
“Even after sustaining major injuries, CPT Leone continues to serve this country,” continued Congressman Gallego. “His leadership and dedication is a testament to his courage and is in accordance with the highest tradition of the United States Army.”
