Lady Eagles win district opener against Laredo Alexander, 12-0

The Eagle Pass High School Lady Eagles opened their 2013 District 29-5A softball play with a decisive win against the Laredo Alexander High School Lady Bulldogs by the score of 12 to 0 via the ten run rule after the fifth inning on Tuesday, February 26, 2013, at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Student Activity Center Softball Field.
Lady Eagles pitcher Samantha De Leon muzzled the Lady Bulldogs batters allowing only four hits, four strikeouts, and one walk to earn the opening District 29-5A win and shutout.
In the top of the first inning, the Lady Bulldogs threatened to score on two base hits but Lady Eagles hurler Samantha De Leon found her groove to deny the Lady Bulldogs from crossing home plalte.
The Lady Eagles jumped to a quick 3 to 0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, which they never relinquished, as Lady Eagles leadoff hitter Sandra Mendoza laid down a perfect bunt single to reach first base, Monica Flores reached base on a Lady Bulldog error advancing Mendoza to second base, Jessica Garcia smashed a 2 RBI double to right center field scoring Mendoza and Flores, and Melanie Mendoza hit a groundball to shortstop but reached base on an error scoring Garcia with two outs giving the Lady Eagles a 3 to 0 lead after one inning.
In the second inning, Lady Eagles pitcher Samantha De Leon recorded two strikeouts to stop the Lady Bulldogs from scoring and the Lady Eagles exploded for four runs as first baseman Samantha Fuentes received a base on balls to leadoff, Krystal Perez laid down a sacrifice bunt advancing Fuentes to second base, Sandra Mendoza received a base on balls, Monica Flores was hit by the pitch to load the bases, Jessica Garcia belted a 2 RBI single to center field scoring Fuentes and Mendoza, and Keanna Cisneros hit a one RBI single with one out scoring Garcia to give the Lady Eagles a commanding 7 to 0 lead after two innings.
In the third inning, Lady Eagles right-hander Samantha De Leon faced only three Lady Bulldogs to keep the shutout going while the Lady Eagles erupted for another four runs as Lady Eagles left-fielder Krystal Perez received a base on balls, Sandra Mendoza hit an RBI single scoring Perez and stole second base, Monica Flores smashed an RBI single scoring Mendoza and advanced to second base on the throw from the outfield to the infield, Dariela Velasquez hit a groundball to shortstop but reached base on a Lady Bulldog error scoring Flores, Keanna Cisneros received a base on balls and stole second base, and Melanie Mendoza hit an RBI infield single scoring Velasquez to give the Lady Eagles an insurmountable 11 to 0 lead after three innings.
The Lady Eagles added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning as Lady Eagles first baseman Samantha Fuentes led-off with a single to center field, Vivian Ramirez also hit a singe to left-field advancing Fuentes to second base, Sandra Mendoza received a walk to load the bases, and Fuentes dashed home on a wild pitch to score the Lady Eagles twelfth run of the game.
Lady Eagles starting pitcher Samantha De Leon stopped the Lady Bulldogs in both the fourth and fifth innings to earn her first District 29-5A win of the season.
Leading the Lady Eagles on offense was second baseman Jessica Garcia who batted 2 for 4 with a single and a double and four RBIs and scored two runs, Sandra Mendoza went 2 for 2 with one RBI and scored 3 runs, Monica Flores batted 1 for 3 with one RBI and scored 3 runs, Keanna Cisneros hit l1 for 3 with one RBI, Melanie Mendoza went 1 for 3 with one RBI, Samantha Fuentes batted 1 for 2 with two runs scored, and Vivian Ramirez hit 1 for 1.
With the victory, the Lady Eagles improve to 8-4 overall and 1-0 in District 29-5A. The Lady Eagles next play the Laredo United South High School Lady Panthers on Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at 7 p.m. at the EPISD Student Activity Center Softball Field,
