Lady Mavericks split 2-2 at Mission Fastpitch Festival

The Eagle Pass C.C. Winn High School Lady Mavericks split four games (2-2) at the Rio Grande Valley’s prestigious Mission Fastpitch Festival during February 14-16, 2013, gaining valuable experience in the three day softball tournament against the Valley’s top teams.
The Lady Mavericks traveled four and one-half hours to Mission, Texas to participate in the annual Mission Fastpitch Festival. In their first pivotal tournament game on Thursday, February 14th, the Lady Mavericks fell to the talented Brownsville Pace High School Lady Vikings by a score of 6 to 1 allowing six runs in the first two innings on four errors and never quite able to shake off the road weariness. Lady Mavericks freshman hurler Amberly Garza had an outstanding game allowing the mighty Lady Vikings batters only three hits despite taking the loss. Lady Mavericks Natalie Garcia, Rosemary Hernandez, Alyssa Lopez and Amberly Garza each had one base hit against the Lady Vikings.
On Friday, February 15th, the Lady Mavericks dropped a hard game against the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High School Lady Bears by the score of 3 to 0 in their second tournament game. Lady Mavericks freshman pitcher Brittney Perez gained valuable experience in the game although taking the loss. Lady Bears pitchers limited the potent Lady Mavericks hitters to only four hits, two each by senior second baseman Rosemary Hernandez and junior center-fielder Natalie Garcia.
In their third tournament game on Friday, February 15th, the Lady Mavericks shutout the pesky Brownsville Rivera High School Lady Raiders by the score of 12 to 0 behind the stellar pitching of freshman Brittney Perez and clutch hitting of Alyssa Lopez, Rosemary Hernandez, Natalie Garcia, Ariana Ruiz, and Karla Lopez. Lady Mavericks senior pitcher Neftali Sanchez also hurled one inning in relief.
On Saturday, February l6th, the Lady Mavericks continued their momentum with a second victory against the talented McAllen Memorial High School Lady Mustangs by a score of 5 to 4 under the right arm of freshman hurler Amberly Garza and key hitting by Lady Mavericks Ariana Ruiz, Rosemary Hernandez, Lorena Sanchez, Caridad Garcia, Gisselle Cerda, Alyssa Lopez, and Natalie Garcia.
The Lady Mavericks next play the San Antonio Kennedy High School Lady Rockets on Tuesday, February 19th, at 7:00 p.m. at home in the EPISD Student Activity Center’s Softball Field under the auspices of Head Coach Gustavo Varela.
