Lady Mavericks win season opener against Laredo Nixon

The Eagle Pass C.C. Winn High School Lady Mavericks easily defeated the Laredo Nixon High School Lady Mustangs by a score of 18 to 4 in five innings via the 10 run rule to win their 2013 softball season opener under new Head Softball Coach Gustavo Varela on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, in Laredo, Texas.
Lady Mavericks freshman pitcher Brittney Perez went the distance (5 innings) to earn her first high school and 2013 season victory lassoing the Lady Mustangs hitters.
The Lady Mustangs jumped to a one to zero lead in the bottom of the first inning, but the Lady Mavericks bats came alive in the top of the second inning scoring three runs as third baseman Ronnie Valdez singled, Alyssa Lopez bunt singled advancing Valdez to second, right fielder Giselle Cerda hit a fence rattling 2 RBI triple scoring Valdez and Lopez, and Lorena Sanchez hit a deep fly ball to center field scoring Gisselle Cerda on a tag up for the RBI, taking a 3 to 1 lead.
The Lady Mustangs stampeded back to score three runs in the bottom of the second inning to retake a 4 to 3 lead.
The Lady Mavericks answered with a four run rally of their own to regain the lead 7 to 4 in the top of the third inning as center fielder Natalie Garcia got on base on a Lady Mustangs error, second baseman Rosemary Hernandez reached first base on another Nixon error, shortstop Ariana Ruiz belted a 2 RBI double scoring Garcia and Hernandez, Ronnie Valdez followed with a single advancing Ruiz to third base, Alyssa Lopez grounded out scoring Ruiz and moving Valdez to second, and Lorena Sanchez stroked an RBI single scoring Valdez.
Lady Mavericks hurler Brittney Perez shutout the Lady Mustangs in the bottom of the third inning while the Lady Mavericks exploded scoring six runs in the top of the fourth inning as Ronnie Valdez got a base on balls, Alyssa Lopez smashed a single advancing Valdez to second, Giselle Cerda belted an RBI single scoring Valdez, Lorena Sanchez walked onto base, Leslie smashed a fiery line drive mishandled by the Nixon outfielder scoring Lopez, Cerda, and Sanchez, followed by Karla Lopez reaching first base on another Nixon error, Rosemary Hernandez stroked an an RBI single scoring Lopez, and Hernandez scored on a passed ball, giving the Lady Mavericks an insurmountable 13 to 4 lead over the Lady Mustangs.
Lady Mavericks pitcher Brittney Perez silenced the Nixon bats in the bottom of the fourth inning while the Lady Mavericks added five runs in the top of the fifth inning causing the home plate umpire to call the game via the 10 run rule, earning their first win under the Head Coach Gustavo Varela- era.
The Lady Mavericks will participate this weekend in the Mission Fastpitch Festival Softball Tournament in Mission, Texas, facing the top teams in the Rio Grande Valley.
