Prominent Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico Veterinarian shot and drives self to U.S. for medical help

Prominent Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico veterinarian, Dr. Gerardo Chapa Garcia, was shot this afternoon, Thursday, February 21, 2013, in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, by unknown assailants and managed to get into his pick-up truck and drove himself to the Eagle Pass International Bridge seeking medical treatment in Eagle Pass, Texas, whereupon U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers summoned an ambulance to transport him immediately to the Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center and was later airlifted to a San Antonio, Texas hospital due to the severity of the gunshot wounds sustained by him.
The U.S.-Mexico border twin cities of Eagle Pass, Texas and Piedras Negras, Coahuila were shocked and saddened by the news of Dr. Chapa being shot in Piedras Negras and have begun a prayer vigil to wish him a speedy recovery. Dr. Chapa is well-liked and highly regarded both in Mexico and the United States as a total professional and dedicated to his family.
