The deadline for people to register as candidates for the City of Eagle Pass Mayoral and City Council election on May 11, 2013 saw no additional candidates register other than the previously registered
candidates with incumbent Mayor Ramsey English Cantu seeking reelection and Eagle Pass businessman Saul Fernandez challenging him for Mayor and City Councilmen for Places 1 and 4 Rudy Villalpando and Luis Sifuentes drew no opponents.
The May 11, 2013 Mayoral election promises to be one of the most hotly contested ones in history as local son Ramsey English Cantu seeks reelection to a second term while local businessman Saul Fernandez will seek to unseat him.
The Mayoral race will pit two distinct visions for economic growth and prosperity for Eagle Pass with Mayor Ramsey English Cantu calling for planned and controlled growth with clean sustainable businesses while challenger Saul Fernandez proposes allowing all industry who wants to open a business in Eagle Pass such as the proposed open surface coal mine be allowed to do business in the community.
The City of Eagle Pass is facing unique opportunities and challenges in the 21st Century as well as issues concerning its enviable distinction of being on the United States-Mexico border.
In the next ten weeks, Mayor Ramsey English Cantu and challenger Saul Fernandez will present their plans and vision for the City of Eagle Pass and its over 26,000 residents. Local registered voters in the City of Eagle Pass will begin casting their ballots in eight weeks through early voting as to which candidate will lead Eagle Pass for the next four years.
