Eagle Pass Cub Scout Pack 298 celebrated their 2013 Soap Box Derby on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at the United Methodist Church in downtown Eagle Pass with 15 participants. Cub Scouts, family members, and friends enjoyed a clear blue sky and perfect weather during the Soap Box Derby.
Cub Scout Pack 298 opened the 2013 Soap Box Derby with the pledge of allegiance and the Cub Scout oath followed by pizza and refreshments for all participants. Joining the Cub Scouts during the opening ceremony were their older fellow scouts-Webelos and Boy Scouts.
Following the opening ceremonies, food and refreshments, the 2013 Soap Box Derby competition opened with 15 competitors. Each participant was responsible for building their very own soap box racing car out of wood and related materials. Each soap box derby car was weighed and measured to ascertain they met the soap box derby regulations. They all passed with flying colors.
Prior to the soap box derby races, all 15 entries were judged for originality, craftsmanship, appearance, and funniest categories. Judges were Jose Humberto Hernandez and Wesley Lorimore.
After the judging, finally came the moment everyone had been waiting for-the racing of the soap box derby race cars. All 15 entries raced against each other to determine the fastest soap box derby racer to the delight of the Cub Scouts, participants, parents, and guests.
Winning the overall fastest soap box derby racer-First Place-was the beautiful pink shoe-shape with diamonds racer designed and built by Jo Ann Mynar Melendrez. Jo Ann Mynar Melendrez’s pink shoe racer won every race it ran against the other 14 competitors. Winning second place as the fastest soap box derby racer was Justin Perry, whose racer was barely nipped at the finish line by Jo Ann Mynar Melendrez’s pink shoe racer. Earning third place as the fastest soap box derby racer was Sydney Perry, Justin’s sister.
The soap box derby racer winning the most original category was Jamie Garcia Hobbs. The best craftsmanship racer was Jo Ann Mynar Melendrez’s pink shoe car. Winning the best appearance soap box derby racer was William Davis, Jr. The funniest soap box derby racer title went to Abigail Ogren.
Participating in the 2013 Cub Scout Pack 298 Soap Box Derby included William Davis, Jr., Justin Perry, Sydney Perry, Johnny Mynar Melendrez, Jo Ann Mynar Melendrez, Dominick Banda, Jacob Ogren, Abigail Ogren, Sean Leonard, Justin Ramirez, Elijah Garcia Hobbs, Jonathon Urbina, Humberto Sanchez, and Jamie Garcia Hobbs.
The Cub Scouts and participants were all awarded a certificate of participation, a play driver’s license, and soap box derby patches. Everyone learned important lessons in life and soap box derby racing regulations. All 15 participants, parents, and guests enjoyed an afternoon of fun and laughter.
