Lady Eagles defeat Lady Mavericks in 15th meeting, 11-3

The visiting Eagle Pass High School Lady Eagles defeated their cross-town rival, C.C. Winn High School Lady Mavericks, in their 15th meeting of their storied seven year rivalry by a score of 11 to 3 amidst a packed EPISD Student Activity Center Softball Field on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 in an important District 29-5A game.
The homestanding Lady Mavericks sought to end the Lady Eagles 14 game winning streak by sending freshman right hand pitcher Brittany Perez while the Lady Eagles countered with sophomore southpaw hurler Krystal De La Cruz on the pitcher’s circle.
The Lady Eagles opened the game with one run in the top of the first inning on a leadoff double by Lady Eagle shortstop Sandra Mendoza followed by a deep fly ball to right field by Monica Flores advancing the swift-footed Mendoza to third base and then Mendoza scored on an infield error by the Lady Mavericks to give the Lady Eagles an early 1 to 0 lead.
Lady Eagle hurler Krystal De La Cruz shut down the potent Lady Mavericks batters during the first and second innings holding them scoreless while Lady Mavericks pitcher Brittany Perez limited the Lady Eagles to only one run in the first two innings.
The Lady Eagles ripped the game open exploding for nine runs in the top of the third inning as Krystal Perez leadoff with a single followed by a bunt single by Sandra Mendoza advancing Perez to second base, Monica Flores flied out to left field, Jessica Garcia received a base on balls to load the bases, Dariela Velasquez slammed a two RBI double scoring Perez and Mendoza, Keanna Cisneros belted a 2 RBI double scoring Garcia and Velasquez, Krystal De La Cruz singled advancing Cisneros, Melanie Mendoza stroked a 2 RBI double scoring Cisneros and De La Cruz, Melanie Mendoza made an out going to third base, Samantha Fuentes slammed a double, Krystal Perez was hit by a pitch, Sandra Mendoza belted a 2 RBI double scoring Fuentes and Perez, Monica Flores hit a one RBI double scoring Mendoza, and Jessica Garcia grounded out but not before the Lady Eagles scored nine big runs on nine hits and one base on balls to take a commanding 10 to 0 lead.
The Lady Mavericks regrouped and scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to make it a game as Leslie Salinas grounded out, Daisy Diaz reached first base on an error, Natalie Garcia belted a single advancing Diaz to second base, Rose Mary Hernandez reached base on an error scoring Diaz, Ari Ruiz reached base on another Lady Eagles error scoring Garcia, Ronnie Valdez grounded out scoring Hernandez, and Alyssa Lopez flied out for the third out but not before the Lady Mavericks plated three runs to narrow the score 10 to 3.
The Lady Eagles added one run in the top of the fifth inning to pad their lead 11 to 3. Both pitchers settled down and held the opposing team scoreless for the remainder of the game in the sixth and seventh innings.
Lady Eagle lefty pitcher Krystal De La Cruz earned the victory going seven innings allowing four hits, two strikeouts, and three unearned runs. Lady Mavericks right hand hurler Brittany Perez allowed 17 hits, one strikeout, three walks, and 11 earned runs in taking the loss.
Leading the Lady Eagles on offense was Sandra Mendoza going 5 for 5 with two doubles, two singles, three RBIs, and scored three runs; pitcher Krystal De La Cruz helped her cause with batting 3 for 4 with three singles; Krystal Perez went 2 for 2 with two singles and scored three runs; Keanna Cisneros batted 2 for 3 with one single, one double, one RBI, and scored one run; Melanie Mendoza hit 1 for 2 with one double and two RBIs; Samantha Fuentes batted 1 for 3 with one double and two RBIs; Dariela Velasquez went 1 for 4 with one double, two RBIs, and scored one run; and Monica Flores batted 1 for 5 with one double and one RBI.
For the Lady Mavericks, Natalie Garcia, Ari Ruiz, Alyssa Lopez, and Giselle Cerda each had one hit in the game. Lady Mavericks Natalie Garcia, Rose Mary Hernandez, and Daisy Diaz each scored one run in the game.
Both teams demonstrated outstanding competitiveness, team spirit, and sportsmanship throughout the game, adding another thrilling chapter to the storied softball rivalry between the Lady Eagles and Lady Mavericks during the past seven years.
