Maverick County Interim County Commissioner of Precinct 2 Daniela Aleman and other local public officials attended the 2013 U.S.-Mexico Border Bi-National Tire Conference in San Antonio, Texas during April 3-4, 2013. Accompanying County Commissioner Daniela Aleman were Maverick County Road and Bridge Department Head and County Inspector, Apolonio Rodriguez, Maverick County Auditor’s Office Assistant, Gustavo Rodriguez, and City of Eagle Pass Public Works Director, Hector Chavez.
Maverick County, like all U.S.-Mexico border communities, has tens of thousands of used tires that have accumulated in local landfills, public parks, and storage facilities which require to be destroyed and disposed of. Since being appointed Interim County Commissioner of Precinct 2, Commissioner Daniela Aleman has tackled this environmental and public health hazard head-on doing extensive research and discovering a cost-effective disposition method of these tires littering the community.
The two-day international conference between U.S.-Mexico border communities presented innovative and leading methods on how to effectively and environmental-friendly dispose and utilize the millions of used tires found along the bi-national border.
Commissioner Daniela Aleman stated that Maverick County and the City of Eagle Pass are looking at developing and implementing a pilot project which will shred the used tires in the community and utilize the by-product for paving local roads and other projects. If successful, the joint Maverick County and City of Eagle Pass project will be the first project in the U.S.-Mexico border to effectively dispose of the used tires and recycle it into a productive community use.
Commissioner Daniela Aleman will present her conference findings and joint Maverick County and City of Eagle Pass project for approval by Maverick County Commissioners Court.
