Monica Flores’ two home runs power Lady Eagles past SA Churchill, 13-7

Eagle Pass High School Lady Eagle junior center fielder Monica Flores slammed two homeruns, including a three-run towering home run over the center field fence and a signature grand slam over the left field fence producing seven runs, to power the Eagle Pass Lady Eagles past perennially tough San Antonio Churchill High School Lady Chargers in a playoff warm-up game on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Student Activity Center Softball Field, displaying the finest slugging performance in the history of Eagle Pass Lady Eagles softball since 1994.
Lady Eagle sophomore southpaw pitcher Krystal de la Cruz held the potent Lady Chargers bats scoreless in the top of the first inning.
The Lady Eagles exploded for three runs in the bottom of the first inning against Lady Charger pitcher Taylor Coffield as Lady Eagle leadoff hitter Sandra Mendoza belted a single to left field and promptly stole second base, Lady Eagle Monica Flores reached first base on a strike out with a dropped ball advancing Mendoza to third base and Mendoza scored on a wild throw to first base by the Lady Charger catcher and Flores went to second base on the errant throw, Lady Eagle Jessica Garcia made the first out, Lady Eagle pitcher and clean up hitter Krystal de la Cruz belted an RBI double scoring Flores, and pinch runner Lady Eagles Sairah Gonzalez scored on a fielder’s choice by Lady Eagle Keanna Cisneros to give the Lady Eagles a 3 to 0 lead.
The Lady Chargers rallied for five runs in the top of the second inning to take the lead, 5 to 3.
The Lady Eagles tallied five runs in the bottom of the second inning to regain the lead 8 to 3 on a towering three run home run over the center field fence with at least 20-30 feet past the 200 foot fence by Lady Eagle Monica Flores.
The Lady Chargers battled back scoring one run in the top of the third inning to narrow the score 8 to 4.
The Lady Eagles erupted for four big runs on a dramatic, signature Lady Eagle Monica Flores towering grand slam home run over the left field fence with at least 50-60 feet past the 200 foot fence bringing the loyal Lady Eagles fans in attendance to their feet and leaving the visiting Lady Chargers coaches, players, and fans in awe of Flores’ display of power and slugging prowess, receiving a standing ovation. Lady Eagle Monica Flores two home run performance is undoubtedly the finest hitting and slugging performance in the history of Lady Eagles softball history to date. Flores is only a junior and definitely was in the “zone” with her hitting on this day.
The Lady Eagles scored another run in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 13 to 6 lead while the Lady Chargers added one run in the top of the sixth inning to make it a 13 to 7 game.
Lady Eagle starting pitcher Krystal de la Cruz had a solid five innings of work and reserve Lady Eagles pitchers Amanda Appleton and Samantha De Leon hurled one inning each.
The Lady Eagles will now face the Edinburg Vela High School Lady Saber Cats in the Bi-District Championship this week at a date, time and place to be determined on Tuesday, April 23rd during the day. The Lady Eagles will enter the state playoffs with an overall season record of 24-6 under the direction of head coach Oscar Ruiz and assistant coaches Ricardo Ruiz, J.J. Iracheta, Saul Salas, and Carlos Rodriguez. Best of luck to the Lady Eagles in the playoffs.
