Six Eagle Pass Independent School District graduating seniors have been named to the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholars Program by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation of Fairfax, Virginia, announced Luis E. Sifuentes, Head Counselor at Eagle Pass High School, and Maria Luisa Uriegas, Head Counselor at C.C. Winn High School.
Five Eagle Pass High School seniors were named 2013 Gates Millennium Scholars, including Andrea Lissette Pantoja, Daniela Rosiles, April Trevino, Hector Cruz, and Maximo Gonzalez, said Sifuentes.
One C.C. Winn High School senior was named as a 2013 Gates Millennium Scholar, Cecilia Flores, said Uriegas.
The Gates Millennium Scholars Program selects 1,000 talented and gifted high school seniors each year with a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice. Over 12,000 students across the United States apply and compete for this highly competitive and elite scholarship.
Gates Millennium Scholars receive a financial scholarship award, professional and academic training and development, and leadership training during their participation in the Gates Millennium Scholars Program.
“We are very excited to have five Eagle Pass High School students named to the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholars Program, especially since we did not have any during 2012. The first Eagle Pass Independent School District and Eagle Pass High School student named as a Gates Millennium Scholar was Class of 2007 graduate, Alexa C. Calderon,” said Sifuentes.
“We are pleased that Cecilia Flores was named a 2013 Gates Millennium Scholar from C.C. Winn High School. We had six finalists but only one, Cecilia Flores, was awarded the nationally prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship,” said Uriegas.
