Eagles battle San Antonio O’Connor Panthers on Friday, May 31st, for Regional Championship

The Eagle Pass High School Eagles will battle the potent San Antonio O’Connor High School Panthers for the Region IV Finals Baseball Championship on Friday, May 31, 2013, at 7:30 P.M. at the San Antonio Northeast Independent School District Blossom Athletic Center Baseball Field, located at 12002 Jones Maltsberger Road, in San Antonio, Texas.
The Eagle Pass Eagles enter the elite Regional Championship with an overall season record of 24-11-1 under the direction of Head Coach Reynol Mendoza and Assistant Coaches Heriberto Roiz and Henry Silva while the San Antonio O’Connor Panthers sport a 30-7-2 overall season record under the direction of Head Coach David Collenbeck.
The San Antonio O’Connor Panthers defeated the Laredo United Longhorns last week in the Regional Semi-Finals Championship by the score of 2-1 in a one game playoff series in Alice, Texas, to advance to the Regional Championship against the Eagle Pass Eagles. The Panthers also downed the Corpus Christi King Mustangs in a best of three series to win the Regional Quarter-Finals Championship. The Panthers bested the San Antonio Reagan Rattlers in a best of three series to capture the Area Championship.
The Panthers are led by their ace pitching corps of Mark Ecker, Justin Garcia, and Kent Corso.
The Panthers offensive machine is spearheaded by Kent Corso, Jose Rodriguez, Zach Galm, Daniel Cruz, Zachary Davenport, Mark Ecker, and Justin Garcia. The Panthers are a heavy hitting team producing many runs per game when their hitters are in the zone. The Panthers hitters will challenge the Eagles pitching staff during the Regional Championship game. The Panthers also play a solid defense to back up their top notch pitching staff.
The Eagles swept the San Antonio Johnson Jaguars last week in the Regional Semi-Finals Championship in their best of three series in Alice, Texas. The Eagles also upset the Mission Sharyland Rattlers 10-9 in extra innings (8th) in their one game playoff series in the Regional Quarter-Finals Championship. The Eagles downed the Brownsville Hanna Golden Eagles in their one game playoff series in the Area Championship. The Eagles swept the La Joya Coyotes in their best of three series in the Bi-District Championship.
The Eagles pitching staff are led by standout pitchers Devon Torres and Gilbert Villalobos and relief pitchers Chris Perez and Dillon Elguezabal. The Eagles offensive firepower is led by standout freshman first baseman Mando Lopez, Diego Gaona, Juan Lopez, Eric Gonzalez, R.J. Ruiz, Devon Torres, Javy Cardona, Jacoup Roiz, and Kevin Chisum. The Eagles are a complete team as every player can contribute offensively and produce runs. The Eagles defense is solid and supports its ace pitching corps. The Eagles are peaking at the right time in their state playoff run.
The Eagles will be the home team against San Antonio O’Connor Panthers on Friday, May 31st. The Regional Championship baseball game between the Eagles and Panthers will be an exciting and thrilling game that every loyal Eagle Pass baseball and Eagles fan should attend and support the Eagles to victory. The winner of the Regional Championship advances to the Texas UIL 5A State Championship tournament to be held next week at Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas.
The Eagle Pass Eagles varsity baseball team includes Devon Torres, Gilbert Villalobos, Eric Gonzalez, Diego Gaona, Mando Lopez, R.J. Ruiz, Juan Lopez, Jacoup Roiz, Javy Cardona, Roland Rodriguez, Dillon Elguezabal, Chris Perez, Alex Martinez, Fernando Garza, Cesar Mendez, Jack Acuna, Tony Galvan, Chava Lopez, Isaac Ramirez, Joey Soto, Kevin Chisum, and Olexis Gutierrez.
The Eagles athletic trainers include Dwight Argabright, Brian Todd, and student trainers Joey Ruiz, Cynthia Soto, and Erika Polanco. The Eagles volunteer coaches include Mario Trevino, Michael Villarreal, Chris Villa, Joe Villa, and Coach Hinojosa. The EPISD Athletic Director is Edward Graf.
