The Eagle Pass Independent School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved to authorize legal counsel to file an application for injunction against the University
Interscholastic League (U.I.L.) and related parties tomorrow, May 15, 2013, in a state district court in Austin, Travis County, Texas regarding its decision to change the Eagle Pass High School Lady Eagles regional softball quarter-finals championship best of three series against the San Benito High School Lady Hounds into a one game winner take all series due to the suspension of the first scheduled game on Friday, May 10th in Laredo, Texas due to lightning within the area at its regular board meeting on Tuesday, May 15, 2013 in Eagle Pass, Texas.
The Eagle Pass Lady Eagles fell to the San Benito Lady Hounds 2-0 in the first game of a scheduled best of three series after the game was suspended and called a game by the home plate umpire in the top of the sixth inning with one out and a Lady Hound base runner in second base leading 2-0 due to lightning within the area at 10 p.m. on Friday, May 10th, in Laredo, Texas, with the Lady Eagles and Lady Hounds coaches and players thinking that they were going to play the scheduled second game on Saturday, May 11th, and, if necessary, a game three 30 minutes after game two.
However, when both teams arrived at the softball field on Saturday, May 11th, they were informed by the home plate umpire that he had made a mistake in suspending and calling the game over the previous night and that he had consulted with U.I.L. headquarters in Austin, Texas and had been informed that according to U.I.L. rules a playoff game suspended before its completion has to be completed the following day with the winner advancing to the next round and reverting the best of three series into a one game series.
EPISD Board member Ana Santleben made the motion and Board member Claudio Heredia seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously.
The EPISD will file tomorrow morning, Wednesday, May 15th, its application for injunction seeking U.I.L. to reverse its decision from one game to a best of three series and requiring the San Benito Lady Hounds play the Lady Eagles in a best of three series. San Benito is currently scheduled to play San Antonio O’Connor High School Lady Panthers on Friday, May 17th, in the regional semi-finals championship unless restrained by a Court order sought by the Eagle Pass Independent School District.
