Former Maverick County Solid Waste Authority General Manager Hector Daniel Chavez, Jr. pleads guilty in federal court

Former Maverick County Solid Waste Authority General Manager Hector Daniel Chavez, Jr. pleaded guilty today, Wednesday, June 12, 2013, to Count Two of a federal grand jury indictment before United States Magistrate Judge Victor Roberto Garcia of the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas, Del Rio Division, in Del Rio, Texas. Count Two charged Chavez with theft of a program receiving federal funds.
Chavez faces a prison sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison, a fine up to $250,000, up to three years of supervised release, a $100 special assessment fee, and restitution of funds up to $62,179.18 and another $16,000 in construction projects. Chavez is out on bond from federal court.
Chavez served as the general manager of the Maverick County Solid Waste Authority which operates the Maverick County Landfill before his abrupt resignation on January 7, 2013.
Chavez’s arrest and indictment were as a result of a combined U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Texas Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers criminal investigation.
