Maverick County Unemployment Rate is 13.1 Percent in June 2013

The County of Maverick, Texas unemployment rate in June 2013 was 13.1 percent according to the Texas Work Force Commission, a slight increase of .03 percent from the 12.8 percent of June 2012. According to the Texas Work Force Commission, the unemployment rate in Maverick County has slightly increased during the first six months of 2013 compared to the same period during 2012.
Maverick County’s 13.1% unemployment rate during June 2013 is significantly higher than the State of Texas unemployment rate of 6.5% and the United States’ 7.6%.
During the month of May 2013, Maverick County’s unemployment rate was 13.1% compared to 12.6% in May 2012, a 0.5% increase from the same period in 2012. In April 2013 the Maverick County unemployment rate was 13.2% compared to 13.1% in April 2012, a .10 increase. For March 2013, Maverick County unemployment rate was 13.3%. In February 2013, Maverick County’s unemployment rate was 14.2% compared to 14.6% in February 2012, a small decrease of .40%. For January 2013, Maverick County kicked-in the new year with a 14.8% unemployment rate compared to 14.7% in January 2012.
During the first six months of 2013, Maverick County’s unemployment rate dipped from 14.8% in January to its current 13.1% in June, a 1.7% decrease. Although the current Eagle Ford Shale play in Maverick County and South Texas has provided many jobs, most of the new jobs are in counties east and south of Maverick County such as Dimmit County, Karnes County, and La Salle County.
Maverick Countians are having to travel out of town to other counties to obtain jobs in the Eagle Ford Shale oil and gas play despite some activity in the county. Another important job generator in Maverick County is international trade and commerce but this sector has been stagnant during the first six months of 2013.
Maverick County perennially has one of the highest unemployment rates in the United States as well as the U.S.-Mexico border.
