C.C. Winn Mavericks stomped by Del Rio Rams 13-7

The Eagle Pass C.C. Winn High School Mavericks hosted the defending champion District 29-5A Del Rio High School Rams on Friday, September 27, 2013, at the EPISD Student Activity Center Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium in District 29-5A action falling to the Rams 13-7.
The stout thundering Mavericks defense stopped the potent Del Rio Rams at the Mavericks one yard line and took over the ball on downs on the Rams first possession in the first quarter.
The thundering Mavericks offense went three plays and punt giving the Rams excellent field position at the Mavericks 48 yard line. The Rams quickly marched down the Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial turf and scored on a four yard touchdown run by Rams running back Emilio Villarreal and the point after attempt was good to give the Rams an early 7 to 0 lead with 3:27 left in the first quarter.
Mavericks standout running back Deion Alonso returned the ensuing kick-off 55 yards to the Rams 30 yard line giving the Mavericks great field position. The Rams defense stiffened up and stopped the Mavericks offense from scoring and took over possession on downs at the Rams 32 yard line with 1:47 left in the first quarter.
The Rams offense orchestrated a 68 yard touchdown drive culminating on a one yard touchdown romp by Rams running back Emilio Villarreal and the point after attempt was no good giving the Rams a 13 to 0 lead with 11:34 left in the second quarter.
The Mavericks and Rams exchanged possessions without either team being able to score.
Late in the second quarter, the Mavericks defensive back Carlos Cerezo intercepted a Rams pass and returned the football to the Rams 31 yard line with 4:37 left in the second period, giving the Mavericks offense great field position. The Mavericks offense scored on a 31 yard touchdown drive culminating with a two yard run by Mavericks quarterback Juan Elizondo on a fourth down and goal and the point after attempt was good narrowing the score 13 to 7 with 1:08 left in the second quarter.
The Mavericks had another opportunity to score before halftime as Mavericks linebacker Steven Garcia intercepted a Rams pass with 41 seconds at the Rams 32 yard line but the Mavericks offense failed to capitalize on Garcia’s gift. Both teams went into halftime with Del Rio leading the Mavericks 13 to 7.
The mighty Thundering Mavericks Marching Band and Silver Line Dance Team performed majestically during halftime entertaining the loyal Mavericks Nation fans and visiting Del Rio Rams fans.
In the third quarter, the Rams and Mavericks exchanged several possessions with each team’s defense stopping the other’s offense from scoring and dominating the game.
The Mavericks had a final opportunity to score either the tying or winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter as Mavericks defensive end Erick Perez recovered a blocked punt by Rams quarterback Walt Ashley at the Rams 49 yard line giving the Mavericks great field possession with a few minutes left in the fourth period. The Mavericks offense was marching down the field for the potential score when disaster struck as the Mavericks fumbled the football and the Rams pounced on it to deny the Mavericks the go-ahead score. The Rams ran out the clock to earn a hard fought victory over the Mavericks in District 29-5A action.
The Mavericks fall to 1-5 overall in the season and 0-1 in District 29-5A league play. The Mavericks will be open during Friday, October 4th, and next play on Thursday, October 10th, against the Laredo Alexander Bulldogs at 7:00 P.M. at the Laredo United Independent School District Student Activity Complex.
